The silver-haired wolf leapt backwards, its muscles coiling and releasing in a blur of power. In the same motion, it twisted sharply to the left, its massive frame gliding across the ground just in time to evade the arrows slicing through the air toward it.
The arrows had barely missed him, he was relieved, but the escape did nothing to ease the agony clawing through his chest.
Nathan watched helplessly as Ella grew smaller and smaller in the distance, the horse's hooves thundering growing quieter and quieter, the wind slowly carrying her scent away, until she was gone, completely out of sight and out of his reach.
The world seemed to hollow out around him, his efforts in vain. He slowed down, not in defeat, but certainly not in victory.
