Chapter 197 - Chapter 162: Iron and Foxfire

**Kitsune's Log, Supplemental**

**Fallow Field, Ten Miles North of the Contact Line recording**

**37 days after Rothgard's Fall**

Patience is a blade. The sharpest cut comes when no one expects it.

Kitsune lounged in the deep shade of an ancient oak, one leg crossed lazily over the other, her nine golden tails curled neatly around her like a living throne. The giant luminescent vines that normally glowed soft violet in the canopy were barely visible in the mid-morning light, reduced to faint threads of color against the green. A light breeze stirred the tall grass of the fallow farm field, carrying the distant scent of smoke and turned earth from the warzone ten miles south.

Beside her stood a squad of royal guards in polished Albion plate, their expressions tight with impatience. A few paces away, the court representative — Lord Reginald Ashford — paced back and forth, dabbing at his forehead with a lace handkerchief. "These Americans," he muttered for the third time. "They promised dawn. It is well past dawn. If this is how they honor their word—"

Kitsune's golden eyes flicked toward him, a slow, amused smile curving her lips. She said nothing. As Albion Ambassador to Discovery, she had watched the sky burn only days ago — had seen three of the Imperia's greatest logistics hubs reduced to splinters and ash in the space of a single heartbeat. Whatever Captain Nolan promised, she had no doubt he would deliver far beyond expectations.

A faint dust cloud rose on the northern horizon. Lord Ashford continued griping about the heat, waving his handkerchief like a flag of surrender. Kitsune's keen fox ears twitched first, then the royal guard officer beside her stiffened. "Movement," Captain Aric Vaelor announced, voice low and sharp. "Column approaching from the north."

The entire royal party turned. A long column of iron vehicles appeared along the old farm road — fifteen heavy 10x10 transports escorted by HAS-V-A1s rolling in tight formation. The 6x6 variants rode securely on reinforced flatbed trailers, their massive frames lashed down for the journey, while the lighter 4x4 HAS-V-A1s prowled alongside as armed escort, Vulcan cannons sweeping the flanks. Dust billowed behind the convoy like a pale banner of war.

The royal guards shifted, hands tightening on weapons, eyes wide with shock. Lord Ashford actually took a half-step back. Kitsune did not move. Her smile only deepened, soft and dangerous.

The lead 4x4 HAS-V-A1 turned off the road and rolled smoothly into the fallow field, coming to a precise stop directly in front of her. As the rear door hissed open, Captain Marcus Hale stepped out in crisp grey fatigues. The entire company wore the same uniform — all grey with rank pips and stripes on the collars, name patches on the right breast, and on the left sleeve the eagle with spread wings and star above a deep blue shield. Hale's own insignia marked him clearly as company commander.

Behind him, the rest of the long column continued to pour into the field — flatbeds lowering ramps with mechanical whines, additional HAS-V-A1s fanning out into defensive positions, and engineers already leaping down to begin marking the perimeter. The commander approached, removing his helmet and offering a crisp salute. "Ma'am," he said, voice steady and professional. "Captain Marcus Hale, 1st Company, Republic Guardian Force. We're here to establish the forward operating base as promised."

Kitsune rose in one fluid motion, tails swaying like living flame. She let her most comfortable persona slide into place — the velvet-and-razor femme fatale who had once made kings forget their own names. "Captain Hale," she purred, extending a delicate hand. "You are exactly on time. I am Kitsune, Albion Ambassador to Discovery. This is Lord Reginald Ashford of the Albion court," she gestured elegantly to the still-flustered nobleman, "and Captain Aric Vaelor of the Royal Guard, who will serve as your primary liaison."

Lord Ashford managed a stiff bow. Captain Vaelor simply nodded, eyes still flicking toward the spreading column of iron vehicles with open astonishment. Hale returned the nod, his gaze calm and assessing. "Appreciated. I'd be honored if you'd join me while we oversee the FOB deployment. The quicker we're operational, the sooner we can start pushing the Imperia back where they belong." Kitsune's smile widened, golden eyes gleaming with genuine pleasure.

"Lead the way, Captain," she said softly. "I've been waiting to see what your people can do when they're not merely burning the sky." Behind her, the engineers were already marking out the perimeter while the flatbed 10x10s lowered their ramps. The low whine of electric motors and the clank of heavy equipment filled the fallow field as the war machine of 1st Company began to unfold.

The real fight was only just beginning.
