Chapter 168 - Chapter 131: Grim Council

**Captain James Nolan's Log, Supplemental**

**Ready Room recording**

**35 days after Rothgard's Fall**

Waves of black sail rise again. Council weighs the cost of mercy.

The ready room's overhead lights cast long shadows across the polished conference table as Captain James Nolan entered, the heavy door sealing behind him with a soft click. The senior department heads were already seated, their faces grim under the steady blue glow of the wall displays. Commander Voss sat at his right, her black tactical uniform crisp, eyes sharp with intelligence reports. Dr. Daniel Solkaman occupied the chair beside her, the chief science officer's usual curiosity replaced by a tight line of concern. Chief Engineer Raj Patel leaned forward, arms braced on the table, while A.L.I. stood at the far end in her android avatar, photonic patterns flowing calmly across her corneas. Dr. Leanne Nolan completed the circle, her expression mirroring the weight that had settled over the room.

Nolan took his seat at the head without ceremony. The holotable flickered to life at his touch, projecting the latest sensor data: a second massive black fleet arrowing west from the Atlantian islands toward the eastern coast of the Western Continent. Hundreds of galleons and troop transports moved in tight formation, their sails dark against the simulated sea.

"Another wave," Nolan said, voice low and steady. "They're not giving the Western Continent time to breathe. Albion is already bleeding from the first assault. This one will hit their eastern coast in two weeks if the currents hold." Commander Voss tapped a control, zooming the display to highlight projected landing zones. "Our orbital assets confirm the scale. Larger than the northern force that struck Blackthorn Harbor. They mean to crush the continent in one decisive push."

Dr. Solkaman rubbed his chin, eyes narrowed at the tactical overlay. "The timing is deliberate. They know Albion is weakened and that we have committed limited resources to their refugee fleet. If we stand aside, the Imperia will roll over the western kingdoms before any formal alliance can solidify."

Raj Patel leaned back, arms crossed. "Our own position is stable for now, but the colony is still young. We have the railgun capacity for targeted strikes from orbit, and our lunar and near-Earth asteroid collection operations are already replenishing stocks for both the big guns on Discovery and the small arms and carbines. That gives us some breathing room on munitions, but each strike still burns power and exposes our limited reserves. We cannot sustain a prolonged campaign without compromising Shire Valley's own defenses."

A.L.I. spoke with her usual calm precision, her avatar's green corneas flickering with data streams. "The diplomatic talks with Grand Mage Kitsune Vulpine and the Albion delegation have reached a preliminary framework. They expect us to honor the spirit of mutual defense. Refusing support now could fracture that trust before the Dwarves even join the table."

Leanne Nolan nodded, her voice measured but firm. "The refugees in the valley are already integrating. If the Imperia overruns the eastern coast, more waves of displaced civilians will flood our borders. We cannot simply close the gates and pretend the war is not at our doorstep."

Nolan let the silence stretch for a moment, his gaze sweeping the table. Every face reflected the same internal conflict he felt—the hard calculus of limited resources against the moral weight of lives already under their protection. He had seen enough of the Imperia's cruelty through Jasmine's reports and the intercepted feeds to know that inaction carried its own cost. Yet every railgun strike, every training cycle diverted to Albion's defense, pulled resources from the colony's long-term survival.

He met each of their eyes in turn. "We will honor the spirit of the treaty we are building. Limited orbital support for direct threats to refugee corridors and the eastern coast. Accelerated training for Guardian Corps units capable of deploying alongside Albion forces. Full diplomatic engagement with the Dwarves upon their arrival. But we draw the line at open-ended ground commitment. Our people come first. The valley comes first."

The table murmured its agreement, the grim mood lightening slightly as a clear path forward emerged. Nolan deactivated the holotable, the eastern ocean map dissolving into empty air. "Prepare the updated brief for the Albion delegation," he said, rising. "We move forward together—but on our terms." Outside the ready room, the ship's steady heartbeat continued, a quiet reminder that the stars above held both promise and peril. The second wave was coming, and the decisions made in this room would shape the fate of two worlds.
