**35 days after Rothgard's Fall**

Steel meets spell. Respect is earned in blood and breath.

The conference room hummed with quiet satisfaction as the holographic display faded, leaving only the soft glow of the valley beyond the windows. Captain James Nolan leaned back in his chair, the lines of tension around his eyes easing for the first time in hours. "We have the outline of a treaty. Limited defensive support for the valley, joint training of Guardian Corps units with your knights, gradual technology exchange, and access to mana-stone deposits in clearly defined borders. It is not everything either side wants, but it is a foundation we can stand on."

Lord Alister Greymoor inclined his head, his measured voice carrying the weight of centuries of diplomacy. "A solid beginning, Captain. Since the Shire Valley borders the Dwarven kingdom of Helmsland along the eastern slopes of the Black Spine, I propose we bring the Dwarves into the formal talks. Their territories lie adjacent to yours, and their inclusion would strengthen the greater alliance and secure the entire western flank against the Imperia."

Nolan considered the suggestion for a long moment, then gave a single decisive nod. "Agreed. The Dwarves share the border. Bringing them in officially is the logical next step for mutual defense." Kitsune allowed herself a small, satisfied smile, her nine tails curling contentedly behind her chair. "Then the preliminary talks have been a success. We have moved from strangers to partners in a single afternoon." She paused, golden-orange eyes gleaming with sudden mischief. "However… I have one selfish request before we adjourn."

Lord Alister's posture stiffened instantly, his expression shifting to open concern. "Grand Mage," he began, voice low with warning, "perhaps this is not the time—" Nolan raised a hand, visibly hesitant yet intrigued. "Speak your request, Grand Mage." Kitsune's tails swished playfully behind her like an excited puppy's. "I wish to spar with your most skilled warrior. A true contest, full force, no restraints. As one warrior to another." Alister nearly panicked, his face paling. "Grand Mage, this is highly irregular—"

Kitsune ignored his plea, leaning forward with genuine intensity. "Captain, as a warrior yourself, you must understand that some truths can only be measured in combat. If I am to have a full measure of Discovery's power, I insist on doing so personally." Nolan studied her body language—the eager gleam in her eyes, the way her tails continued their excited swish—and gave an amused grin. "Your request is less magnanimous than you portray. What is the real reason?"

Kitsune's cheeks flushed a faint pink beneath her fur. She glanced away for a heartbeat, then met his gaze again with raw honesty. "I am the top mage on the continent. For decades, I have had no true challenge. I simply… wish to feel alive in combat once more." Nolan's grin widened. He turned to A.L.I. "Ali, who is our top-performing operator on the crew right now?"

A.L.I.'s corneas brightened with cascading code. "Master Sergeant Elias 'Ghost' Vargas, Delta Force. He is currently assisting with the Guardian Corps training assessment exercise and is due to enter the instructor's daily debrief in ten minutes." Nolan nodded once. "Inform him. Adjourn the talks and move the entire party to the training grounds. We will give the Grand Mage her sparring match."

-----

The VIP SUV glided to a stop at the edge of the training grounds. A large sparring space had been hastily marked with flags and bright paint lines. Delta operators and Marines stood in loose formation, off-duty Discovery crew filled the perimeter, and a small scattering of Albion species—curious cadets who had wandered over—watched with wide eyes, recognizing her. The air buzzed with excited murmurs and the low hum of powered armor.

Kitsune stepped out first, her white-and-gold kimono fluttering in the breeze. Master Sergeant Elias "Ghost" Vargas waited in the center of the marked ring, his matte-black powered armor sealed and humming faintly. Tall and athletic with sharp features and short dark hair, he carried the quiet confidence of a man who had survived more than most could imagine.

Kitsune approached with regal grace, stopping at a respectful distance. She bowed low in the formal style of the Albion mage houses, one hand pressed to her heart while the other swept outward in a flourish. "I am Kitsune Vulpine, Grand Mage of the Four Kingdoms, bearer of the Nine-Tailed Flame, and sworn guardian of the eastern realms. It is my honor to test myself against the finest warrior of your people."

Vargas simply inclined his head, voice calm and professional. "Master Sergeant Elias Vargas, Delta Force. Pleasure to meet you, ma'am." She straightened, tails swishing with barely contained excitement. "Sergeant Vargas, I insist you attack with full force. No holding back. Use what you would in combat." Vargas glanced toward Nolan. The Captain met his eyes and gave a single nod. "Don't kill her. But do as she asks." Vargas sealed his helmet with a soft click. "Understood, sir." They took their positions ten paces apart. At Nolan's quiet command, the match began.

Kitsune raised her hands and cast her most powerful barrier spell, forming a shimmering dome of raw mana. In the same millisecond, Vargas brought his service rifle to his shoulder and fired a hypersonic round. The projectile struck the barrier with impossible speed, shattering it in a burst of light and sound that echoed across the grounds. The round zipped past her ear so close she felt the displaced air before her body could even flinch. The backlash slammed into her like a physical blow, staggering her a half-step. Pain flared along her nerves, but she recovered instantly, a feral grin splitting her lips as adrenaline surged through her veins.

Vargas was already inside her guard, armored fist blurring toward her ribs in a lightning-fast jab honed by years of close-quarters combat training. Kitsune twisted, wind magic whipping around her forearm to deflect the blow with a ringing crack, sending sparks flying. The impact jarred her to the bone, but she laughed—a wild, delighted sound—as she countered with a palm strike infused with compressed air that would have shattered stone. Vargas slipped the strike with effortless grace, the suit's actuators giving him impossible speed, and drove an elbow toward her temple. She barely ducked, the armored limb whistling past her ear with a rush of air that tugged at her hair.

They exploded into hand-to-hand combat, a blur of augmented fury that left the watching crowd breathless. Kitsune's wind spell lashed out in a razor-sharp crescent, but Vargas used the force to spin into a devastating roundhouse kick that she barely turned aside with a raised arm. The kick connected with her forearm hard enough to send her skidding back two full paces, her kimono sleeve tearing at the seam. She answered with a fireball that erupted from her palm, the flames roaring toward him in a tight, controlled burst. Vargas rolled under it, the heat singeing the edge of his armor plating, and came up firing his conventional pistol from the hip. The solid round cracked past her shoulder; she slapped the muzzle away with a wind-infused palm, the bullet whining off into the distance as she closed the gap again.

Her expression twisted into a mix of pure feral joy and raw fear—she had not felt this alive in decades. Every spell she cast came lightning-fast, her fingers weaving sigils in the air faster than the eye could follow, but Vargas kept her constantly moving and off balance with his suit-enhanced speed and elite martial arts mastery. He flowed from strike to grapple to throw with fluid precision, each movement economical and devastating. A knife-hand strike glanced off her collarbone, the armor of his gauntlet leaving a bruise that would linger for days. She retaliated with a burst of pressurized air that lifted him off his feet for a split second, but he twisted mid-air like a cat, landing in a crouch and launching into a spinning back kick that caught her in the side.

The impact drove the air from her lungs. Pain flared like lightning through her ribs. She staggered, but the grin never left her face. "Yes!" she hissed, tails lashing with exhilaration. She summoned a shimmering shield of raw force just as Vargas pulled his service rifle and fired a three-round burst. The hypersonic rounds slammed into the barrier with thunderous cracks, each impact sending cracks spider-webbing across the magical construct. The shield shattered on the third shot, and one round zipped so close to her cheek that it parted the fur and left a hot line of burned air in its wake. She felt the heat of it, the nearness of death, and laughed again—wild, unrestrained, alive.

Vargas was relentless. He closed the distance in a blur, using the suit's full power to close the gap faster than any unaugmented human could manage. His fist drove toward her midsection in a textbook boxing combination. Kitsune blocked the first two strikes with forearms reinforced by layered wind magic, the impacts jarring her to the core, but the third punch slipped through and grazed her ribs. She countered with a point-blank lightning spell that arced from her fingertips, but Vargas had already anticipated it; he pivoted, the electricity grounding harmlessly into the armored plating as he drove a knee toward her thigh. She twisted aside at the last instant, the knee glancing off her hip with bruising force.

The exchange continued in a dizzying blur. Kitsune's spells came faster and faster—wind blades slicing the air with audible whistles, bursts of fire blooming like miniature suns, force pulses hammering like invisible hammers—each one a masterpiece of speed and control. Yet Vargas countered every one with the precision of a man who had trained against magic users in the assessment exercises. He used her own spells against her, redirecting wind currents into his momentum for spinning kicks, rolling under fireballs to close distance, and timing his shots so that the hypersonic cracks disrupted her concentration. A solid round from his rifle would have been lethal in live fire; here it grazed her shoulder, the impact blooming across white silk as she spun away.

Kitsune was slowing. Repeated backlashes from shattered spells drained her endurance, each failed cast sending jolts of feedback through her body like white-hot needles. Accumulated mana backlash built in her core, a heavy, burning fatigue that made her limbs feel leaden. Sweat beaded on her brow, her breathing grew ragged, yet her eyes burned with feral joy. She had not felt this pushed, this alive, in decades. Vargas, by contrast, showed almost no fatigue—the suit's actuators and power systems kept his movements impossibly quick and precise with minimal drain on his stamina.

An armored fist finally landed solidly in her side, blowing the air from her lungs and sending pain flaring like lightning through her ribs. She staggered, vision blurring for a split second. Vargas wasted no time. He closed the distance in a single explosive step, locked her into a flawless martial-arts hold that pinned her arms and torso, and pressed the cold muzzle of his pistol against her temple.

The entire grounds fell silent for a heartbeat. Nolan's voice rang out clearly across the field. "Enough." The two warriors separated. Kitsune straightened slowly, breathing hard, a fierce, exhilarated grin still splitting her face. Vargas raised his visor, eyes sharp with genuine respect. "You fight like a storm given flesh," he said, voice rough with admiration. "I have never faced anything like that." Kitsune laughed softly, tails swishing with genuine delight. "And you move like living steel. For the first time in decades, I felt truly challenged. Thank you, Sergeant."

The moment the words left her lips, the spectators erupted in thunderous cheers. Delta operators, Marines, off-duty crew, and the scattered Albion onlookers roared their approval, fists pumping and voices rising in a wave of raw excitement that rolled across the training grounds like a living thing. Nolan watched the exchange with a quiet smile. The Spar had said more than any treaty ever could. Two top-tier elites had tested each other to the edge of their limits, and in doing so, they had forged something deeper than words on a treaty page: mutual respect between warriors.
