**Christening Date plus 93 days (estimated)**

The detainees reveal fragments.

Names and culture emerge.

We learn they watch to protect.

The forest holds its village.

We must decide our next steps.

Carefully.

The senior officers gathered in the main briefing room aboard Discovery, the curved bulkhead holo displaying a live feed from the quarantine cell on the surface. Captain James Nolan stood at the head of the table, arms crossed as he reviewed the latest translation summary on his pad. Commander Halsy sat to his right, Commander Raj Patel to his left, and Dr. Daniel Solkaman occupied the opposite end, his tablet open to the latest physiological notes. A.L.I. stood at the center of the room in her standard black uniform, the infinity insignia at her collar pulsing softly as she began the briefing.

A.L.I. activated the holo display and brought up the recorded dialogue from the cell. "I have completed the initial language acquisition session with the two natives. Their dialect is a structured trade tongue with significant overlap with early English variants, approximately forty-six percent. The remaining vocabulary draws from regional and species-specific influences. We have established basic communication and confirmed their identities and purpose."

Nolan leaned forward. "Names and details."

"The male is called Thistle Ear, a rabbit-like humanoid with enhanced lower limb strength for leaping and elongated auditory pinnae for superior hearing. The female is called Sylva, a cat-like humanoid with vertical pupils for low-light vision and retractable claws for defense and climbing. Both exhibit partial fur coverage on the head, tail, shoulders, and limbs, providing insulation and sensory enhancement. They refer to themselves collectively as Beastkin and belong to a hidden village nestled into the northern ridge of the Black Spine Mountains."

Dr. Daniel Solkaman leaned forward, his tablet displaying the detailed genetic scans he had run earlier. "That matches our medical data precisely. At the genetic level, these Beastkin show a 90% human base genome, but with clear insertions and modifications that give them their animal features—elongated pinnae, vertical pupils, retractable claws, and partial fur coverage. The markers are consistent with crude bioengineering performed several millennia ago. The work was sophisticated for its time but left detectable signatures of deliberate genetic manipulation. Their broad bio-capability suggests the modifications were designed to enhance survival in a forested environment—heightened senses, agility, and natural weapons. No signs of recent tampering or ongoing degradation."

Commander Raj Patel, Chief Engineer, spoke next, focusing on the technological implications. "What can you tell us about their technological level? Any indication of how advanced their society is?"

A.L.I. brought up a new projection, overlaying a rough map of the valley and ridge based on satellite data. "Their technological level appears pre-industrial with elements of steamage and fantastical aspects. Orbital scans reveal faint traces of what look like railroads and steam-powered vessels in the broader region, along with oddities that suggest fantasy aspects—floating platforms or structures that defy conventional physics, likely powered by what they call life-aether or harmony. They are familiar with airships, as they compared our shuttles to vessels they have seen or heard about, describing them as mana-lifted craft with graceful hulls but vulnerable to storms. They also mentioned communication crystals that allow long-distance voice transmission, which they use to stay in contact with their village elders."

Commander Halsy rubbed his chin, considering the strategic ramifications. "If they already possess airships and long-range communication crystals—even at a pre-industrial level—that changes the equation significantly. Their society has the infrastructure to coordinate quickly across distances and move forces by air. Combined with the fantastical elements we're seeing in orbital scans, we could be looking at a population that can respond faster and more unpredictably than a purely steam-age civilization. We need to factor that into any defensive planning around the base."

Nolan studied the holo feed where the two natives sat close together in the white room, speaking quietly in their dialect. "They are worried about their village. If they do not return soon, others will come looking. We already know they are not alone—there is an organized population nearby. The question is how we handle this without escalating into conflict."

A.L.I. continued, zooming in on the satellite scan she had prepared. "I conducted a discreet satellite scan of the northern ridge. The natives did give some specific details about their village during our conversation, but we only located it after careful searching. Their camouflage abilities are remarkable for their technological level—burrows and woven huts blended seamlessly with rock and root systems, almost invisible from orbit. The village is small but appears well-organized, with multiple subspecies living together: cat-like, wolf-like, and rabbit-like individuals, along with a small number of human outcasts who have integrated over time. They live in harmony with the ancient forest, using what they call life-aether or harmony to interact with plants and animals. Their theology centers on Adoni as a figure of mercy and the sacredness of all life, with Lumeni as the Light Bearer, a fallen entity who tempts and challenges the faithful, representing a dark force in their spiritual system that echoes the ancient Shattering."

Nolan's head snapped up at the word "Adoni." The name struck him like a familiar echo from his own faith—Adonai, the Hebrew name for God he had grown up hearing in church services and prayers. He blinked, momentarily surprised, and leaned forward. "Adoni? They use that name?"

A.L.I. nodded, noting his reaction. "Yes, Captain. They speak of Adoni as a central figure in their teachings, associated with mercy, the rejection of slavery, and the sacredness of all life. It appears to be a shared spiritual concept among the Beastkin and the human outcasts in their village."

Nolan exchanged a brief glance with Solkaman, the surprise still evident on his face. "Interesting. That name is familiar to me from Christian scripture—Adonai, one of the names for God. If they use it in a similar context, there may be deeper cultural or historical connections we haven't uncovered yet."

A.L.I. continued her debrief. "They do not connect us to being from another world. They see us as strange humans with powerful machines. Their primary concern is the safety of their hidden village and the potential threat our presence represents."

Solkaman added, "Their fear is genuine, but so is their curiosity. The female, Sylva, responded more openly to visual cues and gestures. The male, Thistle Ear, remains protective but is beginning to engage. Continued dialogue will be key."

Nolan straightened, decision forming. "We continue the sessions. A.L.I., you lead with Voss. Keep the escort minimal. Focus on building trust and gathering baseline information about their society, numbers, and intentions toward us. We do not release them until we understand the full picture. At the same time, we accelerate surface defenses and prepare for potential contact with their village. If they are already watching us, we must assume the entire population knows our location."

The officers nodded in agreement.

A.L.I. closed the holo display. "Understood, Captain. I will proceed with the next session immediately."

Nolan looked once more at the feed where the two natives sat close together, speaking in low tones. "We are no longer alone in this world. How we handle these first encounters will define everything that follows."

The briefing ended.

Below on the surface, the two Beastkin waited in the white room.

The base continued its expansion.

The forest watched.

The first true dialogue had begun.
