The sound cut through the drawing room's noise clearly enough that several people paused and looked toward the hallway. The knock had a quality to it—urgent, not quite panicked but with the compressed energy of someone containing panic through deliberate control.
One of Angelina's household staff answered it. There was a brief exchange of words in the hallway, too low to make out from the drawing room.
Then the staff member appeared in the doorway.
She was looking at Jaegar specifically, which made everyone else in the room look at him too.
"Sir," she said, with the careful formality of someone delivering information that they know will be unwelcome. "There's a man at the door. He says he represents the Aurror's emergency division. He says—" She paused, clearly choosing her words.
"He says there's a situation in the Noble District. He says it involves two women who were identified this morning." Another pause. "He says one of them is your sister."
