Chapter 504 - Ch 124 - Shadows Beneath the Rain

The courtyard was quiet when Jun Mo Xie returned, the rhythmic patter of rain striking the tiled roof the only sound in the dim, silver-washed world.

Beside him walked the Solitary Falcon, his broad shoulders sloping slightly from exhaustion, but his steps still steady.

They passed through the wooden gates, the scent of wet earth and blossoming plum trees drifting faintly in the air. The stones beneath their feet were slick from the downpour, reflecting the wavering light of the lanterns hung along the veranda.

Jun Mo Xie stretched his arms lazily, rolling his shoulders until the joints gave a satisfying pop. With a casual motion, he reached up and pulled away the Oni mask from his face, the crimson lacquer glistening under the rain's fine mist.

He exhaled slowly, a half-smile tugging at his lips.

"Go and rest," He said lightly, his tone tinged with a knowing amusement. "There's going to be more fun soon."

Solitary Falcon stopped, giving a slight bow of acknowledgment. "As you say. I also need a drink after all that."

His voice was gruff, but respectful. Without another word, he turned and disappeared down the covered walkway, his tall frame melting into the rain-dark shadows as he made his way toward his quarters.

Jun Mo Xie watched him go, the corners of his mouth lifting in quiet satisfaction. Then, with deliberate ease, he untied the outer robe he had been wearing and exchanged it for his casual attire, a simple but finely tailored white robe, the fabric light enough to breathe but warm against the chill.

He stepped out onto the porch and sank into the long-backed wooden chair that waited there, its armrests smooth from years of use.

The rain poured beyond the overhanging eaves, a silvery curtain that blurred the garden into a shifting watercolor. The sound was steady, soothing, a heartbeat of the heavens themselves.

A young maid appeared from the inner hall, her footsteps light and careful on the wooden floor. She carried a tray with both hands, a porcelain teacup steaming gently upon it. Bowing low, she offered it with the utmost respect.

Jun Mo Xie accepted the cup, his fingers curling around the warm porcelain. He smiled faintly and nodded in approval. "Mm… the fragrance is good. It's tasty."

He took a slow sip, savoring the blend as it warmed his throat.

The maid's eyes brightened briefly at the praise before she retreated silently, her presence vanishing like a whisper.

The young master leaned back in his chair, watching the silver threads of rain dance in the courtyard. But just as the peace began to settle over him, the ground to his right stirred.

It was subtle at first, a ripple in the flagstones that might have been mistaken for the shifting of a shadow. But then the darkness deepened, swelled, and from it rose a shape.

First came the torso, then the abdomen, the waist, and legs forming in smooth, unnatural sequence until a man stood there where moments ago there had been only stone.

Jun Mo Xie's gaze lifted without surprise. A slow grin curved across his lips.

"So you're back," He said, his voice carrying both welcome and curiosity. "How did it go?"

The newcomer reached up and pulled back his hood, revealing a face identical to Jun Mo Xie's own, not merely similar, but an exact mirror in every detail.

The same sharp eyes, the same subtle arch to the brows, the same faint smirk that seemed to know far more than it let on.

The man smiled and gave a casual thumbs-up. "Went well. Four of them are gone."

His voice carried a note of satisfaction, the kind only earned from a hunt gone perfectly according to plan.

Jun Mo Xie's eyes glinted with approval. He waved his hand lazily, and with a soft shimmer in the air, another chair appeared beside him as if conjured from the rain itself.

"Sit," He said. "I'll have them bring another cup of tea."

The maid from before appeared again, as if summoned by thought alone. Without hesitation, she set down another cup, filling it with the steaming brew before placing it gently before the newcomer.

"Young Master Jun Xie," She addressed him, bowing as deeply as she had to the first.

Jun Xie, for that was indeed his name, accepted the cup with a polite nod, his gaze flicking briefly toward the retreating maid. He took a sip, the faint steam curling up toward his face, and then set the cup down with a soft click against the wood.

"Tell me something," He said suddenly, his eyes narrowing with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. "Why did you do this? You created a body for me when there was no need. It's… pointless."

Jun Mo Xie leaned back, his own cup cradled in one hand, his smile deepening into something more deliberate.

"No," He said, "it's not pointless at all."

He let the rain fill the space between them for a heartbeat before continuing.

"This," He gestured toward Jun Xie, "is the presence of a mysterious master. A shadow no one can place, yet whose existence is undeniable. Even the Solitary Falcon, one of the Eight Great Masters, follows and serves you. Imagine what that looks like from the outside."

He turned his gaze toward the rain beyond the porch. "Soon, in the coming war, he will make a grand appearance. This isn't just for show. It's to create a deterrent, something that will make the enemies of the Jun Family think twice, thrice… perhaps a dozen times before daring to touch us."

Jun Mo Xie's voice remained calm, but the undertone was cold steel. "It may not protect us forever. But it will buy us time. Enough time to prepare for what's coming."

Jun Xie studied him for a long moment, then smiled, leaning back into his chair.

"I like it," He admitted. "I'm still stuck at the third layer of the Hongjun Pagoda anyway. I'll need time to make progress."

Jun Mo Xie's eyes narrowed slightly in amusement. "Then take your time. There is no need to rush. The more you accumulate and experience, the further you will go. Pushing too hard… sometimes it breaks more than it builds."

He sipped his tea again, the faint bitterness grounding his words. "You're already at the peak of Sky Xuan. Spirit Xuan is within reach. Just go at your own pace. Train with others. Learn what you can from every exchange."

Jun Xie chuckled, a grin spreading across his face. "Fine. I'll take the soft approach then. Let's see how far I can stretch this advantage."

The two men sat there in companionable silence for a while, the rain still falling steadily beyond the veranda. The sound of it against the stone paths and garden leaves was a constant murmur, broken only by the occasional clink of porcelain as they set down their cups.

Lightning flashed faintly in the distance, illuminating the garden for an instant before fading back into the muted silver gloom.

Jun Xie swirled the tea in his cup, the liquid catching the light.

"You know," He said, his tone casual but edged with interest, "next time you want something done quietly, you should let me go after more than just four. I could have thinned them out further."

Jun Mo Xie smirked. "Four was enough. More than that, and it will disrupt the balance. We're not trying to exterminate them outright... at least not yet. We just did that to unsettle them. Make them fear what they can't see."

Jun Xie gave a low laugh. "Fear of the unknown… effective as always."

The rain intensified, the drops striking harder against the roof tiles, the sound deepening into a steady roar. Somewhere in the distance, a wind chime jingled faintly before being swallowed by the storm.

Jun Mo Xie leaned back further, the wood of the chair creaking softly under his weight. His eyes half-lidded, he let the cool air from the rain drift over his face.

"Rest tonight," He said. "There will be more soon."

Jun Xie tilted his head, an amused smirk tugging at his lips. "Oh? Planning something already?"

Jun Mo Xie's gaze flicked toward him, unreadable. "Always."

The storm raged on as two identical figures sat side by side, their silhouettes framed against the warm glow of lantern light and the silver wash of rain.
