The Valley of the End marked the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Sound. The most notable feature were two colossal statues of the men who had fought there with a waterfall between them.

Hashirama stood on the Land of Fire's side. Madara on the otherside. Even in stone, the betrayal of two who'd been friends held true.

Naruto Uzumaki landed atop the First Hokage's head. He wore his orange and blue jacket. The white collar framing his face while the red spiral crest stark against his back. His blue eyes were fixed on the figure across the water.

Sasuke stood on Madara's statue with his back to Naruto.

History had a way of repeating itself. A man trying to stop his friend from walking away. Now Naruto stood in Hashirama's place, and Sasuke stood in Madara's.

Sasuke's took a step forward. The action was enough to make Naruto snap.

"You're just gonna run off?!"

Sasuke's head turned slightly, "Tch. Screw off."

The blonde boy's sucked in a deep breath as he saw the flame-like tattoos on Sasuke's face.

I couldn't do it. Sakura's voice echoed in Naruto's mind, I tried... but I couldn't do it. So now... it was all on just you, Naruto. Please... bring Sasuke back... This is my wish... my wish of a lifetime...

Naruto took a deep breath. He was someone who always kept their promises.

"Like I already told Sakura. Leave me alone."

At that he glared.

Sasuke had a sneer forming. "Heh. What's that look for?"

For a second, Naruto remembered the boy who awkwardly offered him food when he was tied to the log during the bell test. The same kid who blushed when asking Sakura for help during tree-climbing practice. The teammate who had thrown himself into a storm of senbon to protect him from Haku.

"Is this really the same sasuke?"

I don't ever want to watch my precious comrades die in front of me again. I've already lost everything once before! Sasuke's voice from the Chunin Exams burned in his memory.

Naruto's fists shook with anger at these memories. "WHY?! Sasuke, what's wrong with you?!"

"What's wrong with me? That's none of your business."

Naruto grit his teeth.

"I have my own path. I don't owe you or anyone anything."

He gave him a look.

"Let me make this clear. I'm done playing Konoha's little game. Go home."

Naruto's heart pounded at his chest like someone banging at the door. "Choji, Neji, Kiba, Shikamaru and even Bushy Brows. They all risked their lives for you."

"And?"

He froze. This wasn't the Sasuke he knew. This was someone else. Shikamaru's voice echoed in his mind. It's not like Sasuke is my best friend. I don't even like him. But he's our comrade. He's a Shinobi of Konoha. And because of that, I'll risk my life to bring him back. That's the Konoha way. That's the Will of Fire.

Naruto looked up. He wasn't just here because of a mission. He was here because of a promise. And no matter how far Sasuke tried to run, he wasn't letting go.

"Does Konoha mean nothing to you?!"

Sasuke kept walking.

Suddenly Naruto slammed onto him, dragging him across the stone floor. The blonde drove his fist into the uchiha's face, splitting his lip and snapping his head to the side.

The uchiha spat blood straight into Naruto's face.

"You—"

"Did playing around with my so-called comrades make me stronger?"

"..."

"I'm going to Orochimaru."

Naruto's grip tightened. "Orochimaru killed the Third Hokage and tried to wipe out Konoha! You think he's just gonna give you power for free?! He wants your body, Sasuke! You might not come back! You might die! You think I'm gonna let you throw your life away?!"

"It doesn't matter," Sasuke replied. "As long as I achieve my goal, that's enough."

"YOU CAN'T DO THIS!"

"If you're going to stand in my way...then I have no choice."

"I'll take you back by force if I have to!"

Sasuke started laughing. Such a hollow, bitter sound. He remembered their fight on the hospital rooftop. Kakashi had stopped them before either could land a real blow.

"Come to think of it, we were interrupted last time."

A wave of guilt washed over Naruto. Was it my fault? Was that fight what pushed Sasuke to this?

"I-I didn't want it to be like this…"

"Who cares what you want?" Sasuke grabbed him by the shirt and effortlessly lifted him off the ground. The blonde struggled, but couldn't break free.

Sasuke let go and as he fell, a fist met him halfway.

It cracked the young shinobi's rib and slamed him down into the lake below with a massive splash.

Sasuke stared at his hand. "What is this power?" The cursed seal's black markings began to recede. "So this is what Orochimaru was talking about. My body's already adapting."

The uchiha looked down as Naruto had burst out of the water, sprinting across the surface before leaping into the air. The blonde's fist missed by inches. Sasuke countered with a spinning kick to his face.

Blood flew from Naruto's mouth, but he managed to form a single hand sign mid-flight.

Ninja Art: Shadow Clone Jutsu!

From the puff of smoke, multiple clones grabbed Naruto mid-air and slung him back. A foot connected with Sasuke's face, slamming him hard into Madara's statue.

"Did that wake you up?"

"Yeah…" Dark and wild eyes meet upon Naruto's. "I've been wide awake. Dreaming about a future that's never going to come."

The voice grew louder and angrier.

"Dreaming about who I should be... trying to be like all of you. But I'm not you... I never was. That's why I left. That's why I seek power!"

In an instant, Sasuke vanished and reappeared behind Naruto. The uchiha drove a crushing blow sending Naruto skipping over the water before crashing.

"My dream isn't rooted in the future," the uchiha muttered quietly. "It's rooted in the past."

Naruto's head burst from the surface of the water. He coughed and spat, trying to catch his breath as the cold river pulled at his body. "Pretty good shot," he said between gasps. "So, it's for real, huh?"

"Yeah. It's for real. I intend to kill you, Naruto."

Those words hurt the young uzumaki.

"You mean, I don't matter to you at all? Everything we've been through. Was it all for nothing?!"

"No."

Sasuke's eyes closed as memories flashed behind them. Those red eyes, and a cold voice: To awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. You must kill your closest friend.

"All we've been through wasn't insignificant. You're my best friend."

"Then why?!"

Sasuke opened his Sharingan. "That's exactly why I have to kill you."

"That makes no sense, dattebayo!"

Sasuke had already made his choice as he ran. Fists flew. Punches met blocks. Sasuke's hand slipped into Naruto's pouch mid-strike, stealing a kunai as he dropped down.

With a flick, the darkhaired boy hurled the kunai.

Naruto countered with a shuriken, but it was just a feint. Sasuke landed a brutal front kick under his chin. He grabbed the blonde's collar and threw him into the water.

"Just like I said, you've been waiting for this, haven't you? No Kakashi to stop us this time. No Sakura to cry and get in the way."

He slid down the waterfall, hands weaving rapidly.

"I'll say it again. I'm going to kill you."

The sound of a thousand birds the valleys sound as lightning gathered in his palm: Chidori.

Naruto stood, blood dripping from his mouth. "I'm going to beat the crap out of you…" he muttered, forming a shadow clone to help him create his jutsu. "...and drag you back home whether you like it or not!"

A swirling ball of chakra formed. The clone then grabbed him by the arm and flung him forward.

Chidori and Rasengan clashed mid-air, lightning and water exploding between them in a coccoon. The shockwave blasted them to opposite ends of the valley.

Sasuke landed on the river's surface, panting.

Naruto floated upon the water with a sad expression. "You wouldn't even think twice about killing me… huh, Sasuke?"

In response the cursed seal began to spread across the uchiha's skin again. Black flame like markings, crawling up to his face as he activated Cursed Seal version 1.

"Did you know that at a high enough level, a shinobi can read their opponent's thoughts?"

Naruto got up.

"After a few exchanges, a real fighter can sense exactly what the other is thinking." Sasuke's sharingan locked onto Naruto. "So, tell me… Can you read mine?"

Fire Style: Phoenix Fire Jutsu!

A flurry of flaming projectiles moved through the air. The small, fast-moving fireballs zigzagged towards Naruto, who dodged by leaping into the air

Sasuke flickered into the air above Naruto and came crashing down with an axe kick. The heel of his foot slammed into Naruto's neck, blasting him into the water below with a painful splash.

He scrambled back to his feet. He tried to counter with a punch. Sasuke weaved around it. With the power of the cursed mark on the uchiha's side, Naruto found himself completely outclassed.

They fell into a vicious taijutsu exchange of punches, elbows, and kicks. Naruto landed a few solid hits. But every time he did, Sasuke returned them with twice the force. A spinning back kick slammed into Naruto's ribs, sending him crashing against the cliffside.

When Naruto jumped back in, he had created several shadow clones to flank Sasuke from every side.

The avenger made short work of them. A simple dance of cqc, a fireball, and the clones vanished into puffs of smoke.

The uchiha appeared in front of him again, lifting him effortlessly by the front of his jacket. His other hand crackling with lightning.

Those words echoed in his mind: All we've been through wasn't insignificant. You're my best friend.

Then why…? Naruto thought, rage consuming him. Why do you want to kill me?!

"It's over," Sasuke said coldly, driving the Chidori forward.

Naruto barely moved his hand in time, deflecting the killing blow just inches away from his heart.

SPLURK.

Sasuke looked at his arm buried in Naruto's lung. "So I missed your heart. Nice move with your hand there. Still didn't help much, did it?"

He pulled his hand out with a sickening sound.

"You're done. You've lost your right arm. Your lung's wrecked. You can't breathe or make hand signs. It's over."

The pain of a pierced lung was in-describable. It was a sudden and sharp, severe chest pain that intensified with each breath. Each inhale felt like swallowing broken glass. Each exhale felt like the last. Memories surfaced and dissolved.

In Sasuke's mind, Itachi's voice repeated over and over. To awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. You must kill your closest friend.

Each sentence strengthened his resolve, the uchiha's hands found themselves around Naruto's throat. Yet the boy's face carried no anger. His eyes, even now, refused to harden. He looked at Sasuke like he still believed that uchiha was his friend

"I will sever this bond if that's what it costs."

A third tomoe bled into existence in each eye, drawn out by the emotions coiling through Sasuke. While the fox's red chakra escaped out of Naruto in a wave. Sasuke's teeth gritted together as the kyuubi chakra peeled his skin off.

He didn't let go.

Naruto's punctured lung began to seal. Flesh and muscle crept back over the wound, knitting shut under the Kyubi's furious chakra. Naruto's eyes carried a faint red glow with his pupils thinning, and whisker marks deepening into his skin. He drove his fist into Sasuke's chest.

Sasuke's grip held.

"Die already."

The uchiha channeled lightning chakra straight through his palm and into Naruto's throat. The current seized every muscle it touched. Naruto's body locked with tendons standing out against his neck, teeth grinding as the voltage clawed through him.

"Is he finally dead?"

Naruto's hands came up and clamped around Sasuke's wrist.

The Kyubi's chakra ripped into Sasuke's skin layer by layer. The uchiha's voice tore out of him in a snarl.

The Cursed Seal answered.

Black flame-like markings erupted across his body. His skin deepened to dark grey. His hair lengthened and bled into dark blue. His eyes went the same grey as a stormy sky. Across the bridge of his nose, a dark star-shaped mark bloomed. From his back, webbed wings tore free.

Curse Seal of Heaven: V2

The lightning chakra flowing through his hand turned black.

Naruto felt his nervous system stutter, felt consciousness become a thing that arrived and left without his permission. The world was going bright then dark then bright again in sickening pulses.

YOU RUNT.

The Kyubi's voice pressed into the space behind his eyes. Weak as ever. Take my power and kill that Uchiha. And you had better thank me, twerp.

A Chakra tail coalesced behind Naruto, fox ears rising from his hair as the red chakra shaping itself around him like a second skin. He drove his heel into Sasuke's chest with everything he had.

The uchiha hit the cliffside hard enough to create a cave inside it.

This guy, Sasuke thought with a smile. He had to give him that much. Naruto had never once in his life learned how to stay down.

The genin stood at the water's edge. His body was numb from the neck down in patches, the black lightning having damaged the body faster than the Kyubi could fully repair.

I didn't know if I was strong enough to beat him.

Jiraiya's voice surfaced in his mind, The point of a summoning jutsu is to leverage the power of giant beasts in battle. Now if only I could summon giant women instead.

Naruto dragged two fingers across the wound in his chest and began to form the hand signs.

Sasuke's eyes went wide. He remembered Gamabunta being summoned against Gaara's transformed state.

"You aren't summoning that thing to stop me."

He shaped the Chidori in his palm. Black lightning crawled across his fingers, crackling with the nature energy, warping the air around his hand.

Sasuke moved at the same moment, Naruto's palm hit the ground.

Crimson chakra spiraled outward from the point of contact. The summoning array spreading across the water as the Kyubi's power poured into it. But before the summoning jutsu could finish. The black Chidori punched through Naruto's hand and drove straight into the summoning array.

Kyubi chakra. Natural energy from the curse mark. The lightning chakra.

All of it fed into the space time jutsu at the same moment. The array had no framework to contain what it had been given. A sphere of black that warped space-time erupted from the contact point, crackling and expanding, pulling the light around it into strange angles.

YOU DUMBASSES! The Kyubi's voice came through naruto's mind, stripped of its usual mockery. YOU ARE GOING TO GET US ALL KILLED.

Naruto didn't have time to ponder on those words or his pain as space warped towards a point.

The valley folded inward around them.

Yet, despite everything, Sasuke found himself pushed away by Naruto.

The blonde managed to mouth the words through the chaos, his smile swallowed by the roar of collapsing space-time.

Goodbye, teme.

A bright white light consumed him. A shockwave tore through the valley and took everything with it.

.

.

.

Sasuke came back to himself floating face-up in the water.

His ears rang. His vision swam with dark spots. Above him, stormclouds had rolled in. Rain came down in cold and indifferent strikes on the surface of the water around him in a thousand tiny impacts.

He didn't move for a long moment.

Why?

The word left him quietly at first. He looked up at the churning sky, the lightning threading between the clouds and at the darkness gathering at the edges of the valley.

"WHY?!"

His voice broke on it. The thunder answered as a shot. Sasuke screamed into the rain. He was past caring... past anything resembling an uchiha's stoic composure."I tried to kill you. I wanted to reject you. I wanted to sever our bond... walk away... never look back. And you tried to save me. Right up until the end. You tried to save me."

His jumped onto Madara's statue.

Sasuke'e bloodied knuckles splitting further against the stone. His shoulders shook. The breath coming out of him had no rhythm to it. Tears ran down his face and fell into the dirt below, mixing with the rain and blood.

"I just wanted to be strong enough," he said to no one. His voice was very small. "Strong enough to kill him. To kill Itachi."

The grief was too much for his chest to hold. Loss. Guilt. A rage that had nowhere left to go. The loss itself trigged a change in his brain chemistry.

The Sharingan burned.

The tomoe twisted in his eyes, pulling inward, as three intersecting ellipses settled into place.

The Mangekyō Sharingan.

Sasuke stayed on his knees for a long time.

When he finally rose, his face had gone still. The tears had dried against his skin. The anger, grief, and the last fragile thread connecting him to the village... the boy who refused to stop believing in him has been gone.

What remained was a lonely path into the darkness ahead...
