Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Basics

Matt didn't quite understand how he was going to become a great mage, but he really liked the idea. it was something he'd fantasized about for years, there's no way he would let this opportunity pass him by.

'OK, you said you'll make me into the greatest mage, what do I need to do?' Matt said excited to finally do something other than farm work.

'Slow down tiger, you're not becoming an archmage in a day. First thing's first I gotta explain how the system works because you obviously don't know what any of it means.'

'First, lets look at your status bar. HP is your health points, this is how much you can get hurt before you die. The system allows you to heal over time, but the process is not exactly fast. Your health goes up by 1 point every 5 minutes, this recovery rate also doubles while you're asleep. MP is magic points, all the magic you use costs a certain amount of MP. With your low amount of MP and poor magic control, you can probably conjure about 2 spells. Trying to use magic without sufficient MP will have the spell fail, most likely having the magic erupt wildly, potentially hurting you in the process. Lastly, S is your stamina, this one should be self-explanatory, the more you do, the more stamina you use. The lower your stamina, the more tired you are. Once your stamina runs out you'll be incredibly tired and will probably pass out. You got all that kid?'

'Yeah I think I understand, make sure none of these reach 0 or else bad things happen.' Matt stated, matter of factly. 'I guess that's good enough. Now for your Bio, if you think of the words "Open Bio" the bio screen will open allowing you to see all the information the system has about you.'

As Matt thought of the words "Open Bio" a new screen appeared before him, this time taking up most of his vision.

Bio

Name: Matthew Arber

Race: Human

Age: 17

Level: 1

Class: Mage (Novice)

Path: None

Strength: 12

Constitution: 12

Intelligence: 8

Wisdom: 9

Dexterity: 10

Charisma: 10

Skills: Basic Earth Control Lv.1, Basic Lightning Control Lv.1, Magic Absorption Lv.1

There was a lot that Matt didn't understand, how did this "system" now his full name, and his age? What did it mean by level? and what were all these numbers? Then as he kept reading, he saw the 3 skills the system said he had. It said he could control both earth and lightning, if that's true then he would be considered a genius. Most people can only control 1 form of magic. Only around 5% of all mages could control 2 elements. The greatest genius of all time, and current "Paragon of Magic" was the only known person to have been able to control 3 elements, Fire, Wind, and Earth.

As Matt continued to think about how much of a genius he is, Emma began to speak once again. 'This is your Bio screen, here is the basic information about who and what you are. I know you're not too bright but I'm gonna assume you know what the 1st three mean. Now for your Level, your level indicates your overall experience with magic based on some predetermined factors, you don't have to worry about that too much, just know that doing magic gives you experience and once you have a certain amount, your level goes up and you get stronger. You understand kid?'

'yeah, I understand, I'm not stupid, and will you stop calling me "kid" I have a name, and I know you can see it in my Bio.' Matt replied, a little irritated by Emma's demeanor.

'Well, you ARE a kid and that's just how I speak, so calm down. anyway next is your Class, obviously this is a magic system so you're a mage, simple enough. Path is what type of magic you specialize in, you won't be able to choose a magic path for a while, so don't have to worry about that one for now.

After that we have your 6 characteristics,  these are who you are on a fundamental level. They're given a number based on how well you are with them, with 10 being the average for most humans. Your strength and constitution are a bit higher because all that farm work has made you stronger and more resilient than most normal people. Intelligence is your mental capacity, how well you're able to process information and how much mana you have, yours is a bit below average, but the system can actually help you improve that. Next is wisdom, that's how well you're able to use the information that you have, how well you can analyze your surroundings, and how well you can remember information during tense situations. Then we have Dexterity. This is how fast and how well you can move, as well as how steady your body is. Dexterity is your ability to make quick precise movements. Lastly, we have Charisma. This one isn't too important to becoming a mage unless you plan on using suggestion magic, but I'll explain it anyway. Charisma is how well you are able to present yourself before others and how likely they are to take your words seriously. The higher your Charisma the more likely people are to take you seriously and the easier it is to persuade people. I know it's a lot of information to take in, but please tell me you understand, I don't want to repeat all that.'

'I believe I understand the  basics of how it works, and if I forget something along the way you can always remind me right?' Matt responded, he truly did understand what most of it was. Some of it had gone over his head, but he was sure it was nothing too important. More importantly, he wanted to go ahead and learn about his skills. 'Now what about the skills, can I really use 2 elements, and what does magic Absorption mean?' Matt urged Emma to keep explaining, excited at the prospect of finally learning magic.

'Hold your horses kid, I was getting to that. So yes, you do get multiple elements, you'll actually have the opportunity to get more than just those 2 elements; these are just the ones you've encountered so far. The lightning is obviously from being struck by the lightning from the magic storm when you activated the stone. As for the earth magic, as funny as it would be for you to have acquired it when you smacked your head on the ground after getting hit by lightning, it's actually from all your farm work. Your body is far more attuned with the earth than that of a normal person. The skills you have are basic control, which means you will be able to move the elements about and change their shape to some extent. With lightning, you will be able to redirect lightning during a storm, you are not able to create lightning, only control where it goes. With Earth you can lift rocks from the ground and throw them, as well as raise the earth beneath your feet to a certain extent. Lastly, you have Magical Absorption which is a little different. This skill allows you to absorb magic from your surroundings in order to recover MP and make yourself stronger. This skill will also allow you to obtain other magic elements, you just have to absorb some of that magic. There is a limit to how much you can absorb and trying to absorb too much will only hurt you. For example, if you went outside and tried to absorb some magic lightning, you'd probably die.

The concentration of magic is too strong to absorb, and you don't have any experience moving normal lightning so there's no way you'll be able to move magic lightning, it would just hit you head on. The only reason you survived the last lightning strike was because of the magic stone.' With that all the explanations were over for now. Matt was finally on his way to becoming an actual mage.
