Chapter 123 - The Symbol That Should Not Burn

The Hall of Lives fell silent.

The golden symbol continued to shine.

Brighter.

Stronger.

As though something far away had suddenly awakened.

Feroz stared at the glowing map.

The countless symbols spread across the stone table moved faster than before.

Lines shifted.

Paths changed.

Entire patterns rearranged themselves.

It felt less like a map...

and more like a living thing.

For the first time since entering the Hall...

the older Feroz looked genuinely unsettled.

Not frightened.

But concerned.

Deeply concerned.

Feroz stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

The older Feroz did not answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the burning symbol.

The light reflected across his face.

For several moments...

he simply watched.

Then he quietly said,

"It should not be possible."

Feroz frowned.

"What should not be possible?"

The older Feroz finally looked toward him.

"The map only reacts to certain events."

"What kind of events?"

"Events that change more than one future."

The answer only created more questions.

Feroz looked back at the symbol.

It continued burning.

Steady.

Relentless.

Almost like a beacon.

"You said Rahim moved."

The older Feroz remained silent.

Feroz folded his arms.

"That doesn't explain anything."

"No."

"It doesn't."

"Then explain it."

A faint smile appeared on the older Feroz's face.

"Still impatient."

Feroz sighed.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it remains true."

The symbol suddenly pulsed.

The entire table trembled.

Golden lines spread outward from the burning mark.

Dozens of other symbols shifted position.

Some grew brighter.

Others disappeared completely.

Feroz's expression slowly became serious.

"This isn't normal."

"No."

The older Feroz's voice was quiet.

"It isn't."

The chamber fell silent again.

Then...

something unexpected happened.

One of the surrounding symbols flickered.

For only a moment.

A faint image appeared above the table.

A village.

Small.

Peaceful.

Ordinary.

The image vanished immediately.

Then another appeared.

A mountain road.

Several travelers.

Gone a second later.

Then another.

A ruined building.

Darkness.

Gone.

The map continued changing.

Showing fragments.

Pieces.

Moments.

Feroz watched carefully.

"What am I seeing?"

"Consequences."

The older Feroz slowly circled the table.

"When something important changes..."

"...the map shows the paths affected by it."

Feroz looked toward the burning symbol.

"So Rahim caused this?"

The older Feroz remained quiet.

Then he answered carefully.

"Perhaps."

That single word immediately caught Feroz's attention.

"Perhaps?"

"You sound uncertain."

The older Feroz stopped walking.

"For a very long time..."

"...everyone assumed Rahim was the cause."

Feroz blinked.

"What does that mean?"

The older Feroz looked toward the burning symbol.

"It means people often mistake the storm..."

"...for the wind that created it."

Silence followed.

Feroz stared at him.

The answer felt important.

Yet incomplete.

Exactly the kind of answer he hated.

And exactly the kind he kept receiving.

The symbol pulsed again.

This time...

another image appeared.

A dark forest.

Feroz immediately froze.

He recognized it.

The same forest from the memory of his father.

The same rain.

The same darkness.

The image vanished before he could speak.

His heartbeat quickened.

"You saw that?"

The older Feroz nodded.

"I did."

"What was it?"

The answer came quietly.

"A possibility."

Feroz looked confused.

"A possibility from the past?"

The older Feroz smiled faintly.

"The map doesn't think the way people do."

"It does not separate the past and future as clearly as we do."

That explanation only deepened the mystery.

Before Feroz could ask another question...

the burning symbol suddenly dimmed.

Not completely.

But enough for the violent changes to slow.

The trembling stopped.

The chamber became still once more.

The older Feroz exhaled slowly.

Almost as though he had been waiting for that moment.

Feroz noticed immediately.

"You expected something worse."

The older Feroz looked at him.

"Yes."

"What?"

For a moment...

the older version of himself seemed to consider the question.

Then he shook his head.

"Not yet."

Feroz groaned.

Again.

Not yet.

Not now.

Not the right question.

The entire Learning Path seemed obsessed with withholding answers.

The older Feroz laughed softly.

"You are becoming easier to read."

"I'm surrounded by people who refuse to explain anything."

"That is not entirely true."

Feroz raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

The older Feroz pointed toward the map.

"It explained something."

Feroz looked down.

The symbols had mostly settled.

Yet one thought refused to leave him.

Rahim.

Again.

Every path somehow returned to that name.

Every mystery touched it.

Every secret seemed connected to it.

Yet nobody explained why.

His gaze drifted toward the burning symbol.

Then another thought appeared.

A disturbing one.

"If this map shows possibilities..."

The older Feroz nodded.

"It does."

"Then my father must have used it."

"He did."

"Many times."

Feroz looked around the chamber.

At the table.

At the symbols.

At the endless knowledge hidden within the Hall.

Slowly...

a realization formed.

A realization he did not like.

His eyes widened slightly.

The older Feroz immediately noticed.

"You finally thought of it."

Feroz looked at him.

"If my father used this map..."

"...and still disappeared..."

The older Feroz remained silent.

Feroz swallowed.

"If he still failed..."

"...then whatever he was facing was far worse than I imagined."

For several seconds...

nobody spoke.

The older Feroz finally nodded.

"Now you are beginning to understand."

The answer sent a chill through Feroz.

Because it confirmed something important.

Not directly.

But enough.

Qadir had not vanished because he lacked knowledge.

He had stood where Feroz stood now.

Seen things Feroz could barely understand.

Studied possibilities beyond imagination.

And still...

something had happened.

Something powerful enough to overwhelm even him.

The golden symbol flickered one last time.

Then stabilized.

The map became calm.

The chamber returned to silence.

The older Feroz stepped away from the table.

"The lesson is over."

Feroz looked surprised.

"That's it?"

"For now."

Feroz glanced back at the glowing map.

At the burning symbol.

At the countless unanswered questions.

Nothing about this felt finished.

The older Feroz seemed to read his thoughts.

"It never feels finished."

Then he turned toward a doorway hidden beyond the chamber.

For the first time...

Feroz noticed it.

A narrow stone passage.

Almost invisible within the wall.

The older Feroz began walking toward it.

Feroz hesitated only a moment before following.

As they approached the passage...

he looked back one final time.

The map remained glowing softly.

Silent.

Patient.

Watching.

Almost as though it knew something he did not.

Perhaps it did.

The two disappeared into the ancient corridor.

Behind them...

the Hall of Lives returned to silence.

But far away...

deep within the shifting lines of the map...

the burning symbol continued to shine.

And somewhere beyond the reach of the Hall...

someone had made a move.

Someone important.

Someone who had just changed far more than a single future.
