Chapter 44 - Chapter 44

The moment the system pushed back—

Something changed.

Not in the layer.

Not in Riser.

In the figure.

For the first time since it appeared—

It stopped smiling.

Not out of anger.

Not even irritation.

Interest.

"...So it can resist."

Its voice lowered slightly.

Not softer.

Sharper.

Riser didn't respond.

He couldn't afford to.

Every fragment of the layer trembled again—

Not collapsing—

But straining.

Like a structure under pressure—

Trying to hold—

While something kept pushing against it.

Lyra stepped forward again.

Closer this time.

Too close.

"...Get away from him."

The figure didn't even look at her.

"...You're irrelevant."

Her hand tightened.

"...Say that again."

The air shifted.

Not from the figure.

From her.

Riser noticed it immediately.

Even through everything—

He could feel it.

Her energy—

Different.

Not stronger.

Focused.

Sharpened.

"...Lyra."

She didn't look back.

"...Stay out of this."

"...I can't."

Simple.

Immediate.

Because she already understood something he didn't want to admit.

If he broke—

There wouldn't be anything left to protect.

The figure sighed lightly.

"...This is inefficient."

A small movement—

Barely noticeable.

But suddenly—

It was in front of Lyra.

No transition.

No speed.

Just—

There.

Her eyes widened—

But she didn't step back.

"...Move."

The figure tilted its head.

"...Why?"

The pressure hit.

Not physical.

Conceptual.

Like something trying to overwrite her existence.

Lyra's body froze—

For a fraction of a second.

Then—

She pushed back.

Not with power.

With will.

The ground beneath her cracked—

Not from destruction—

From resistance.

"...I said—"

Her voice trembled slightly—

But didn't break.

"...Move."

For the first time—

The figure's eyes narrowed.

"...You're resisting?"

Riser felt it clearly now.

Not just the system.

Her.

She wasn't part of the authority.

She wasn't synchronized.

And yet—

She wasn't being erased.

"...Interesting."

The figure stepped back slightly.

Not forced.

Chosen.

"...You're not bound by the system."

Lyra didn't answer.

But her stance didn't change.

Riser exhaled slowly.

"...You really don't know when to stay back."

She scoffed quietly.

"...Same goes for you."

The system pulsed again.

[System Alert]Foreign Authority Pressure IncreasingSynchronization: 27%

Riser's body tensed.

The connection deepened.

More stable—

But heavier.

"...Tch—"

The fractures around them—

Shifted again.

This time—

Not randomly.

They moved.

Aligning.

Responding.

The figure noticed immediately.

"...Adaptive correction."

Riser's voice came out strained.

"...You're not the only one who can 'test' things."

For the first time—

The layer responded on its own.

The broken space—

Shifted toward the figure.

Not collapsing.

Restricting.

The air tightened.

Not from pressure—

From limitation.

"...You're using the layer against me."

The figure's tone remained calm—

But there was something else now.

Recognition.

Riser smirked faintly.

"...Figured it out?"

The Guardian finally moved again.

Just one step.

But this time—

It wasn't passive.

"...This is the system's domain."

"...External authority is not absolute here."

The figure glanced at it.

"...And yet you failed to maintain it."

"...Correct."

The Guardian didn't deny it.

"...But he has not."

Silence.

The figure looked back at Riser.

Longer this time.

More carefully.

"...You're unstable."

"...Incomplete."

"...And yet—"

A pause.

"...You're holding."

Riser's breathing slowed slightly.

"...Yeah."

"...I am."

The system flared again.

[System Notice]Authority Stabilization IncreasedSynchronization: 34%

Lyra blinked slightly.

"...It's rising faster now."

The Guardian nodded.

"...Because he is no longer resisting it."

Riser closed his eyes briefly.

"...Guess I don't have much of a choice."

The weight—

Still crushing.

Still overwhelming.

But now—

He understood it better.

Not as chaos.

As structure.

The figure exhaled slowly.

"...This changes things."

Lyra tensed again.

"...Meaning?"

The figure looked at her—

Then back at Riser.

"...It means—"

The space behind it shifted.

Not from the layer.

From something else.

"...I'll stop testing."

The atmosphere dropped instantly.

Not heavier.

Sharper.

Focused.

"...And start removing the variable."

The system reacted immediately.

[System Critical Alert]Hostile Action ConfirmedAuthority Clash: Imminent

Riser's eyes snapped open.

The layer trembled—

Not collapsing—

Preparing.

Lyra stepped forward—

Fully now.

No hesitation left.

"...Then you'll have to go through me."

The figure didn't even acknowledge her words.

Because to it—

She still wasn't the threat.

Riser exhaled slowly.

"...No."

Lyra froze.

"...Riser—"

"...You've done enough."

For a brief moment—

Their eyes met.

And she understood.

This wasn't something she could fight.

Not because she was weak.

But because this—

Was beyond strength.

Riser looked forward again.

At the figure.

At the unknown.

"...You want to remove me?"

A faint smile formed.

"...Then try."

The system surged.

The layer responded.

Not breaking.

Not collapsing.

Standing.

And at the center of it—

Riser.

Not as a player.

Not as a challenger.

As the system itself.
