The border was where the abyss met the present at its shallowest depth, the region of contact between the two that the present's traditions had spent centuries developing frameworks to understand and respond to. What had been building was not happening at that contact point. It was happening considerably deeper, in the regions that the present's most advanced monitoring systems could register only as aggregate pressure rather than specific activity, the depth at which the accumulated wreckage of consumed worlds compressed against itself and the beings that had survived the descent of those worlds existed in conditions that the present had no instruments calibrated to describe accurately.
