Chapter 233 — One Second
Brook didn't tell Gabriel.
He didn't tell Henry.
He didn't tell Crowley.
And he definitely didn't tell Tala.
By morning, the strange pressure from the night before had become something he wasn't sure had happened at all.
That bothered him more than if it had stayed.
Brook stood alone in the courtyard behind Asteria's temporary quarters, staring at his hands.
Nothing.
He turned them over.
Nothing.
He pressed his palm against his chest.
His heartbeat was steady.
The familiar presences were where they always were.
Michael.
Lucifer.
Death.
And deeper still—
Gaia.
Silent.
Sleeping.
Brook closed his eyes.
He searched for the fifth pressure.
Nothing answered.
He opened them again.
"Good."
The voice came from behind him.
Brook turned.
Gabriel stood beneath the archway, arms folded loosely.
"You've been standing there for ten minutes."
"Were you counting?"
"I was wondering if you were planning to become a statue."
Brook looked away.
"Couldn't sleep."
Gabriel walked into the courtyard.
"Neither could I."
"Nightmares?"
"No."
Gabriel stopped beside him.
"Thinking."
"About Heaven?"
"Some of it."
Brook glanced at him.
"And the rest?"
Gabriel smiled faintly.
"You."
Brook sighed.
"That's getting old."
"Probably."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Gabriel looked toward the sky.
"You feel different."
Brook's eyes narrowed.
"Different how?"
"I don't know."
That answer made Brook uncomfortable.
Gabriel noticed.
"Don't worry."
"I wasn't."
"You were."
"I wasn't."
Gabriel laughed quietly.
"Fine."
He left the subject alone.
Brook appreciated that.
For perhaps thirty seconds.
Then—
A faint pressure touched Brook's chest.
His smile disappeared.
Gabriel noticed immediately.
"What?"
Brook didn't answer.
The pressure came again.
Not from outside.
From somewhere inside.
It was tiny.
A sensation more than a presence.
Like the tip of a pen touching paper without enough force to leave ink.
Brook's breathing slowed.
Gabriel straightened.
"Brook?"
"I felt something."
Gabriel didn't move closer.
"What?"
"I don't know."
The pressure disappeared.
Brook waited.
Nothing.
Gabriel studied him.
"Do you want me to call Sera?"
"No."
"Why?"
"She already knows about the first one."
Gabriel's expression changed slightly.
"The first one?"
Brook realized what he'd said.
He looked away.
"She doesn't know what it is."
"Neither do you."
"No."
Gabriel nodded.
"Then maybe that's enough for now."
Brook looked at him.
"You're surprisingly reasonable."
"Don't spread that around."
Brook almost laughed.
Then something happened.
The mark appeared.
It wasn't one of the existing marks.
It wasn't Gaia's.
It wasn't shaped like Michael's.
It wasn't like Lucifer's.
It wasn't Death.
It appeared beneath them.
A thin, unfamiliar symbol burned across Brook's skin.
One second.
That's all.
A single second.
Gabriel's eyes widened.
Brook looked down.
The mark pulsed once.
Then—
Gone.
Brook froze.
Gabriel didn't speak.
Neither did Brook.
The courtyard seemed to hold its breath.
Brook touched the place where it had been.
Nothing.
No heat.
No pain.
No lingering glow.
Just skin.
"What was that?" Gabriel asked.
Brook shook his head.
"I don't know."
"Was that the thing from last night?"
"I think so."
Gabriel stared at him.
"It looked different."
"It felt different."
"How?"
Brook searched for the words.
"Like…"
He stopped.
"Like what?"
"Like it wasn't trying to push."
Gabriel waited.
"It was trying to become."
The words sounded strange once spoken.
Gabriel looked toward Brook's chest.
"And then?"
"It disappeared."
"Did you feel it afterward?"
Brook closed his eyes.
"No."
He waited.
"No."
Gabriel nodded slowly.
"Then don't chase it."
Brook opened his eyes.
"You sound like Tala."
"She's usually right."
"That doesn't mean I like hearing it."
"I know."
Footsteps sounded behind them.
Sera entered the courtyard carrying a bundle of papers.
She stopped when she saw Gabriel and Brook standing together.
"What happened?"
"Nothing," Brook said.
Gabriel looked at him.
Sera noticed.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Brook."
"Nothing happened."
"That means something happened."
"It was nothing."
Sera walked closer.
"What happened?"
Brook hesitated.
Then he showed her his hand.
Sera examined it.
"Your hand?"
"Not there."
"Then where?"
Brook touched his chest.
Sera's expression immediately changed.
"When?"
"Just now."
"How long?"
"One second."
Her eyes sharpened.
"Exactly?"
"About that."
"Did it hurt?"
"No."
"Did it burn?"
"No."
"Did you hear anything?"
"No."
"Feel anything?"
Brook thought about it.
"Like something trying to become."
Sera went silent.
Gabriel looked between them.
Sera slowly lowered her papers.
"Did you use any magic?"
"No."
"Did I?"
"No."
She looked at Gabriel.
"Did you?"
Gabriel shook his head.
Sera looked back at Brook.
"Then don't do anything."
Brook gave her a look.
"I wasn't planning to."
She raised an eyebrow.
"You were."
"I was thinking about it."
"That is usually where your problems begin."
Gabriel smiled.
Sera ignored him.
She reached toward Brook's chest but stopped before touching him.
"Don't."
Brook nodded.
She lowered her hand.
"I don't want to trigger it."
"You think you can?"
"No."
Sera's voice was quiet.
"I think whatever happened yesterday may have changed something."
Brook looked down.
"Changed what?"
"I don't know."
Again.
That answer.
The same answer she'd given him last night.
Sera looked frustrated by it herself.
"Your other Sources have identities we can recognize."
Brook glanced toward the sky.
Michael.
Lucifer.
Death.
Gaia.
Sera continued.
"This isn't behaving like any of them."
Gabriel said nothing.
Brook noticed.
"You have something to say?"
Gabriel shook his head.
"Not yet."
Brook frowned.
"That phrase is becoming suspicious."
Gabriel smiled.
"Then stop asking suspicious questions."
Sera looked at both of them.
"I don't want another experiment."
Brook nodded.
"Agreed."
She studied him.
"You're actually agreeing?"
"For now."
Sera groaned.
"Don't start."
Gabriel laughed.
Brook smiled despite himself.
For a moment, the tension broke.
Then Brook felt it.
Again.
A whisper of pressure.
So faint he almost missed it.
He looked down.
Nothing appeared.
No mark.
No light.
No symbol.
But something inside him had shifted.
Not awakened.
Not spoken.
Not even fully present.
Just—
there.
Waiting.
Brook held his breath.
Sera noticed his expression.
"Again?"
Brook nodded.
"Don't touch it," she said immediately.
"I wasn't going to."
"You were thinking about it."
"Yes."
"Stop."
Brook exhaled.
The pressure vanished.
This time, it left nothing behind.
No mark.
No sound.
No answer.
Sera gathered her papers.
"That's enough."
Brook looked at her.
"You're leaving?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because we got information."
"What information?"
Sera looked at him.
"It can appear without being called."
She turned toward the doorway.
"And that's enough information for one day."
Gabriel watched her leave.
Brook remained still.
After a few seconds, Gabriel spoke.
"She trusts you."
Brook looked at him.
"Who?"
"Sera."
Brook shrugged.
"Maybe."
Gabriel smiled.
"No."
He looked toward the place where the mark had appeared.
"She trusts you enough to stop you from hurting yourself."
Brook didn't answer.
Above them, clouds moved slowly across the morning sky.
Asteria continued waking.
People shouted from the streets.
Hammers struck broken wood.
Someone laughed.
Life continued.
And inside Brook—
something had flickered.
One second.
Then nothing.
It hadn't given him power.
It hadn't spoken.
It hadn't revealed its name.
It hadn't even stayed long enough to prove that it had truly awakened.
But it had left one certainty behind.
Whatever had touched Sera's Word Magic the night before—
was getting closer to the surface.
Brook looked down at his chest.
For the first time, he wasn't wondering what it could do.
He was wondering why it had chosen to appear at all.
