Chapter 144 - The King Who Waited

Chapter 144 — The King Who Waited

The first roar shook the sanctuary.

Stone fell from the broken walls.

The dead figures standing at the edge of the forest turned their heads.

Brook looked toward the trees.

Death showed him the lifelines.

Mórkr.

Azael.

Both moving.

Fast.

But neither had entered the sanctuary yet.

Crowley looked at the open black door.

The whisper came again.

"You promised."

Crowley went pale.

Brook grabbed his arm.

"Don't go in there."

Crowley looked at him.

"I wasn't planning to."

Henry stared at the door.

"That thing knows your name."

Crowley looked back into the darkness.

"Yes."

Henry waited.

"And?"

Crowley frowned.

"And I don't like it."

Henry nodded.

"Fantastic."

Shoyo walked toward the door.

Brook immediately stepped in front of her.

"What are you doing?"

Shoyo looked at him.

"Looking."

"From outside."

"Brook."

"From outside."

Sera smiled despite everything.

Shoyo looked at her.

Sera shrugged.

"He's right."

Shoyo sighed.

Then lifted one hand.

Ancient words left her mouth.

Brook had heard Shoyo use magic before.

But never like this.

The symbols around the sanctuary began glowing.

Henry stepped back.

"That's new."

Sera watched closely.

"No."

Shoyo said.

"It's old."

The roots surrounding the black structure moved.

Slowly.

They climbed the walls.

Brook felt Death react.

The lifelines were connected.

The sanctuary was alive.

Not like a creature.

Like a memory.

Shoyo stopped speaking.

Nothing happened.

Then—

the darkness inside the door moved.

Brook immediately raised his weapon.

Crowley stepped backward.

A figure walked out.

The old man screamed.

Rick drew his sword.

Henry froze.

The figure stopped beneath the broken doorway.

He was human.

Or had once been.

Long grey hair fell over his shoulders.

His clothing was ancient.

A crown rested on his head.

Broken.

Rusting.

His eyes moved across Xcution.

Then stopped on Crowley.

Crowley whispered:

"No."

The man smiled.

"Hello, old friend."

Silence.

Brook looked at Crowley.

"You know him."

Crowley couldn't answer.

The old man collapsed to his knees.

"My king."

The man looked at him.

For the first time, his expression softened.

"My people still remember."

Crowley stepped forward.

His hand was shaking.

"The king."

The man nodded.

Crowley stared at him.

"You're alive."

The king smiled faintly.

"You are too."

Crowley's expression hardened.

"That isn't an answer."

"No."

The king said.

"It rarely is with you."

Brook watched them.

There was history between them.

Real history.

Not just a memory Crowley had recovered.

The king was looking at Crowley as though he had been waiting for centuries.

Maybe he had.

Crowley looked at him.

"Why are you here?"

The king glanced toward the black structure.

Then back at him.

"Because you put me here."

Silence.

Crowley stopped breathing.

Brook turned toward him.

"What?"

Crowley shook his head.

"No."

The king smiled sadly.

"You always say that."

Crowley grabbed his head.

Another memory.

A room.

A ritual circle.

The king standing inside it.

His wife crying.

Children screaming.

Crowley drawing blood across stone.

The king speaking.

"Do it."

Crowley returned violently.

He staggered.

Sera caught him.

Crowley looked at the king.

"I didn't put you here."

The king's expression softened.

"No."

He said.

"I asked you to."

Nobody spoke.

Henry slowly looked at Brook.

Brook looked just as confused.

Rick lowered his weapon.

Shoyo stood perfectly still.

Sera looked between Crowley and the king.

"What happened?"

The king looked at her.

Crowley answered first.

"I don't know."

His voice broke.

"I don't remember."

The king stared at him.

"You made sure you wouldn't."

Crowley froze.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

The king looked at him.

Then at Crowley.

"Your friend has forgotten many things."

Crowley's face darkened.

"I know."

"No."

The king said.

"You don't."

Crowley stepped closer.

"Then tell me."

The king looked toward the sanctuary.

"Not here."

Brook stared.

"Why?"

The king's expression changed.

Fear.

The old man noticed.

"My king."

The king lifted a hand.

The old man fell silent.

The king looked toward the forest.

"Mórkr is coming."

Henry looked around.

"Yeah. We noticed."

The king ignored him.

"It is not hunting you."

Brook frowned.

"Then why is it here?"

The king looked toward the open seal.

"Because it knows."

Shoyo stepped forward.

"What?"

The king looked at her.

"The path has opened."

Shoyo's expression hardened.

"We know."

The king shook his head.

"No."

His eyes moved to the black door.

"The last path."

Brook looked at the opening.

Silvet.

He had opened it.

But he had already left.

Brook turned toward the king.

"Where is he going?"

The king smiled faintly.

"Forward."

Brook's patience disappeared.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Silvet was never interested in the sanctuary."

Silence.

Sera frowned.

"Then why open it?"

The king looked at her.

"To make sure we followed."

Everyone became still.

Crowley stared at the king.

"Followed what?"

The king looked north.

"The path."

Brook understood.

Silvet had not opened the sanctuary to release something.

He had opened it because the sanctuary itself was connected to something else.

Something farther away.

Henry shook his head.

"So we ran exactly where he wanted."

The king looked at him.

"Yes."

Henry sighed.

"I hate being right."

The ground shook.

Trees snapped.

Mórkr roared again.

Closer.

Brook turned.

Death showed him the lifeline.

Massive.

Wounded.

Approaching.

Then Azael.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Azael was closer than Mórkr.

Too close.

Sera noticed Brook's expression.

"What?"

"Azael."

Brook looked toward the trees.

"He's coming."

Sera's face hardened.

Crowley immediately moved beside her.

The king watched them.

"Elias's servant."

Crowley turned.

"You know Azael?"

The king smiled without humor.

"Everyone knew what Elias created."

That changed everything.

Brook stared at him.

"Created?"

Sera looked toward the king.

"What do you mean?"

The king looked at her.

"Azael was not born."

The ground shook again.

Brook looked toward the forest.

"We don't have time for this."

The king nodded.

"No."

He looked at Crowley.

"But you need to remember one thing."

Crowley stared at him.

The king stepped closer.

Crowley didn't move.

"You did not betray me."

Crowley's expression changed.

The king continued.

"You tried to save us."

Crowley's breathing slowed.

The king looked toward the black structure.

"And when you couldn't save everyone—"

His eyes lowered.

"—you chose who you could."

Crowley stared at him.

The words hurt.

Brook could see it.

Crowley whispered:

"My family."

The king nodded.

"Your family."

Crowley looked confused.

The king continued.

"My family became yours."

Silence.

The old man began crying again.

Crowley closed his eyes.

The memories came.

A woman handing him a child.

The king bleeding inside a circle.

Crowley holding a sword.

Fire outside.

A voice.

Take them.

Crowley returned.

His eyes were wet.

"I left."

The king nodded.

"You had to."

"I left you."

"You had to."

Crowley shook his head.

The king stepped closer.

"And then you asked me to make you forget."

Crowley froze.

Brook looked at him.

"What?"

The king looked toward the ground.

"You couldn't carry it."

Crowley whispered:

"No."

The king smiled sadly.

"You've been carrying it anyway."

A roar interrupted them.

Closer than before.

Brook drew his weapon.

The dead at the edge of the sanctuary moved.

Not away.

Forward.

Rick stepped beside Brook.

"They're preparing."

Shoyo nodded.

"They remember their purpose."

Henry looked toward her.

"What purpose?"

Shoyo looked toward the forest.

"To protect this place."

Brook frowned.

"They're dead."

Shoyo looked at him.

"They were never asked to stop."

The first trees broke.

Brook saw movement.

Azael.

Walking through the forest.

Not running.

Not hiding.

Coming directly toward the sanctuary.

Brook's entire body tightened.

Sera saw him.

Her face changed.

Crowley immediately stood in front of her.

Sera pushed past him.

"Move."

Crowley didn't.

"Sera."

"I said move."

Brook stepped forward.

Azael stopped at the edge of the trees.

Blood covered him.

Mórkr's blood.

Or his own.

His arm hung strangely.

His body was wounded.

But he smiled.

He looked directly at Sera.

"Hello."

Nobody answered.

Azael looked around.

Crowley.

Brook.

Shoyo.

Then the king.

His smile faded.

"A king."

The king stared back.

"A mistake."

Azael laughed.

"Former king."

The king didn't react.

Azael looked at Crowley.

"Your old king."

Crowley's face hardened.

Azael smiled again.

"Things have changed."

Brook stepped forward.

"Where's Elias?"

Azael looked at him.

"Busy."

Brook's grip tightened.

Azael looked at Sera.

Then smiled.

"And so are we."

The ground shook.

Mórkr roared.

Azael glanced behind him.

Then back at Xcution.

"He's coming."

Henry whispered:

"Why is he so calm?"

Brook understood.

Azael wasn't here to fight Mórkr.

He had led it here.

The Hunter was following him.

Or something else.

Brook's eyes moved toward the trees.

Then toward the black structure.

Azael smiled.

"You still don't understand."

Crowley stepped forward.

"Understand what?"

Azael looked at the open door.

Then at the king.

"The old world is opening."

The king's face hardened.

Azael's smile widened.

"And Elias is waiting."

Sera froze.

Brook looked at her.

Azael continued.

"For her."

The silence became dangerous.

Brook raised his weapon.

Azael smiled at him.

"Come on, Brook."

The Hunter roared behind him.

The dead began moving.

The sanctuary shook.

And Azael whispered:

"Choose."
