Chapter 121 - The Debt

Chapter 121 — The Former King's Debt

The knock came again.

Once.

Deep beneath Remus.

No one moved.

Brook stood at the edge of the broken street, staring into the darkness.

The door below remained partially open.

Only a thin gap.

Barely enough to see through.

Yet something about it made the darkness feel deeper than it should have been.

Henry stood behind him.

"Tell me we're closing that."

Hades didn't answer.

Crowley stepped closer to the edge.

Brook looked at him.

"You know something?"

Crowley kept his eyes on the door.

"No."

Brook watched him.

Crowley added:

"But I don't like the feeling."

Henry sighed.

"That makes all of us."

Sera remained beside Brook.

Her face was pale.

The symbols beneath her feet continued glowing faintly.

Brook looked down at them.

"Can you stop it?"

Sera shook her head.

"I'm not doing anything."

The ground trembled.

Not violently.

Almost gently.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Death stirred inside him.

A lifeline appeared.

Far below.

Massive.

But this time—

there was another.

Brook froze.

"What?"

Henry looked at him.

Brook didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the darkness.

"There's someone else."

Crowley looked toward the door.

"Vaelor."

Hades's face hardened.

Brook turned.

"He's beneath this district too?"

"No."

Hades answered immediately.

"His prison is nowhere near here."

Brook looked back down.

"Then why can I feel him?"

No one answered.

The second lifeline pulsed.

Brook felt something else.

Pain.

Weak.

Distant.

But familiar.

Not physically familiar.

Something deeper.

Crowley suddenly grabbed his head.

Henry jumped.

"What happened?"

Crowley stumbled backward.

Brook moved toward him.

"Crowley."

Crowley raised a hand.

"Don't."

His voice was different.

Lower.

Brook stopped.

Crowley stared at the ground.

And then—

the street disappeared.

Fire.

Crowley opened his eyes.

He was standing inside a burning hall.

The walls were made of stone.

A throne stood at the far end.

Broken.

A man knelt before it.

Young.

Human.

A crown lay beside him.

Crowley knew him.

Vaelor.

Not the prisoner beneath Remus.

Not the immortal king.

This Vaelor still looked alive in the ordinary sense.

Blood covered his clothing.

His hands shook.

Behind him—

voices.

Children.

A woman crying.

Crowley looked toward them.

His family.

Vaelor turned.

"Please."

Crowley looked down.

His body was different.

His hands were covered in black rings.

Smoke moved around his fingers.

He felt something enormous behind him.

Hell.

Vaelor crawled closer.

"My kingdom is gone."

Crowley didn't speak.

Vaelor looked over his shoulder.

Another explosion shook the hall.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

"They're coming."

Crowley finally spoke.

His voice was colder than Brook had ever heard.

"Who?"

Vaelor looked terrified.

"It doesn't matter."

Crowley studied him.

Vaelor continued.

"Take them."

Crowley frowned.

Vaelor pointed toward his family.

"Take them somewhere safe."

Crowley stared.

Vaelor's breathing was uneven.

"Please."

The old Crowley looked toward the family.

Then back at Vaelor.

"What do you offer?"

Vaelor's expression changed.

Crowley watched him.

For a moment—

the king said nothing.

Then he looked at his family.

And made his choice.

"Everything."

The memory shattered.

Crowley collapsed to one knee.

Brook caught his shoulder.

Crowley shoved his hand away.

"I said don't touch me."

Brook stepped back.

Crowley's breathing was heavy.

Sera watched him carefully.

"You remembered."

Crowley slowly raised his head.

"I remembered part of it."

Hades stared at him.

Crowley looked directly at the King of Remus.

"Where is Vaelor?"

Hades said nothing.

Crowley's voice became harder.

"Where."

Hades finally answered.

"His prison is beneath the western foundations."

Brook frowned.

"Then why are we here?"

Crowley looked down.

The answer came before Hades could speak.

"Because this isn't Vaelor."

The street went silent.

Henry looked toward the door.

"What do you mean?"

Crowley pointed.

"That thing."

Brook followed his hand.

Crowley looked at Hades.

"What is behind that door?"

Hades's silence lasted too long.

Sera noticed.

"You knew."

Hades looked at her.

"I knew there was a door."

"That's not what I asked."

Hades's expression hardened.

Crowley stepped forward.

"Answer her."

The air changed.

Brook felt it.

Crowley had not raised his voice.

He didn't need to.

Hades stared at him.

For a moment, neither king moved.

Then Hades spoke.

"Before Remus…"

He stopped.

Crowley waited.

Hades looked toward the ancient door.

"There was a kingdom."

Henry crossed his arms.

"Vaelor's kingdom?"

"No."

Hades's answer came immediately.

Crowley narrowed his eyes.

"Then whose?"

Hades looked down.

"I don't know."

Henry stared at him.

"You just said—"

"I know there was a kingdom."

Hades interrupted.

"I don't know who ruled it."

The ground knocked again.

Everyone froze.

Brook felt the lifeline pulse.

Closer.

His chest tightened.

Sera looked at him.

"Brook?"

He didn't answer.

Pain entered him again.

He grabbed the side of his chest.

This time—

it wasn't weak.

It was overwhelming.

Brook fell to one knee.

Henry moved toward him.

"Brook!"

"Stay back."

Brook's voice came through clenched teeth.

Henry stopped.

Brook closed his eyes.

Death.

The lifeline was clearer now.

Too close.

Brook could feel something wrong with it.

Not dying.

Not wounded.

Something else.

It felt—

broken.

No.

Split.

Brook opened his eyes.

"The lifeline."

Sera crouched beside him.

"What about it?"

Brook looked toward the darkness.

"It's damaged."

Crowley frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Brook shook his head.

"I don't know."

The knock came again.

The door opened another inch.

Hades raised his hand.

Guards immediately moved.

"Evacuate the district."

Henry looked at him.

"Now you want to leave?"

Hades ignored him.

Brook forced himself up.

Sera caught his arm.

He looked at her.

"I'm fine."

She stared.

Brook paused.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Say it."

Henry almost laughed.

Sera shook her head.

The tension broke for half a second.

Then Crowley spoke.

"Vaelor."

Everyone looked at him.

Crowley stared into the darkness.

"His deal."

Hades's expression changed.

Crowley turned toward him.

"He came to me."

Hades said nothing.

"He wanted his family protected."

Crowley's eyes became distant.

"And he wanted to live."

Henry looked confused.

"Live?"

Crowley nodded.

"Long enough to see them safe."

Sera slowly understood.

"The immortality."

Crowley looked at her.

"I gave it to him."

Silence.

Brook watched Crowley.

"Then why is he still alive?"

Crowley stared at his own hands.

"I don't know."

Hades answered.

"Because the agreement never ended."

Crowley's eyes snapped toward him.

"What?"

Hades remained calm.

"Vaelor cannot die because the promise is still active."

Crowley stepped toward him.

"You knew this?"

"I knew enough."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wasn't certain how much you remembered."

Crowley laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"You imprisoned a man whose immortality is connected to me."

Hades said nothing.

Crowley took another step.

"And you decided that information wasn't important?"

Brook moved between them.

"Crowley."

Crowley stopped.

Lucifer laughed.

Brook felt it immediately.

Not outside.

Inside.

The amusement.

The hunger for conflict.

Brook clenched his fists.

Crowley noticed.

For a second, they stared at each other.

Crowley took a step back.

Brook exhaled.

"Vaelor made the deal to protect his family."

Crowley nodded.

Brook continued.

"And you gave him immortality."

"Yes."

"What's the problem?"

Crowley looked toward the ground.

"The price."

Sera frowned.

"You don't remember it."

"No."

Crowley's jaw tightened.

"But every deal has a price."

Henry looked between them.

"So you took something from him."

Crowley didn't answer.

Hades did.

"Something from his bloodline."

Silence.

Crowley slowly turned.

"What?"

Hades's expression remained unreadable.

"That is what the old records suggest."

Crowley's face changed.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Vaelor's family was protected."

Hades looked at him.

"But the protection was part of the agreement."

Crowley stepped closer.

"And?"

Hades's voice lowered.

"The debt may have passed through them."

Sera went pale.

Brook frowned.

"His family is dead."

Hades nodded.

"Yes."

Crowley stared.

The pieces began moving in his mind.

His memory.

The fire.

The children.

Vaelor's voice.

Everything.

Crowley whispered:

"No."

The ground shook.

Hard.

The ancient door opened wider.

A sound escaped from beneath it.

Not a roar.

A breath.

Everyone stopped.

Brook's lifeline sense exploded.

Pain.

Pain.

Pain.

He grabbed his head.

Sera screamed his name.

Brook fell.

The world blurred.

For a moment—

he wasn't in Remus.

He saw darkness.

A long corridor.

Something moving at the end.

Then—

a voice.

Not the Maker.

Not Lucifer.

Not Michael.

Not Death.

A human voice.

Weak.

Distant.

"Help me."

Brook's eyes opened.

He gasped.

Henry grabbed his shoulder.

"What happened?"

Brook looked toward the door.

There was terror in his eyes.

Crowley noticed.

"What did you see?"

Brook swallowed.

"Someone."

Hades turned.

"Impossible."

Brook looked at him.

"They're alive."

The ancient door opened.

Darkness moved through the gap.

Hades raised his hand.

Magic formed around his fingers.

Crowley stepped forward.

Brook forced himself to stand.

Sera grabbed his arm.

"Brook, stop."

Brook looked toward the darkness.

The lifeline pulsed again.

Closer than before.

He could feel the pain.

Someone was alive beneath Remus.

And they had been there for a very long time.

Crowley suddenly froze.

His expression changed.

Brook looked at him.

"What?"

Crowley whispered:

"I remember the price."

Everyone turned.

Crowley's face had gone pale.

Henry frowned.

"What was it?"

Crowley looked toward the ground.

Then at Hades.

His voice was barely audible.

"I didn't take his soul."

Silence.

Brook waited.

Crowley's eyes darkened.

"I took the debt."

The ground beneath Remus shook.

The door opened wider.

And deep beneath the city—

something began laughing.
