Chapter 58 – The Weight of a Choice
The monastery had been quiet for three days.
For Brook, those three days felt longer than most battles.
He had spent nearly every waking hour practicing the mark.
One mark.
That was all Michael had given him.
One.
Brook stood in the center of the monastery courtyard, staring at a small white symbol carved into a stone pillar nearly thirty meters away.
He took a breath.
Focused.
The Archangel Source stirred inside him.
White light gathered around his feet.
He disappeared.
For half a second, there was nothing.
Then—
Flash.
Brook appeared beside the pillar.
He stumbled.
His hand caught the stone.
Henry, watching from the steps, shook his head.
"Better."
Brook looked over.
"That sounded almost like a compliment."
"Don't get used to it."
Brook smiled.
He turned around.
The original mark was still visible where he'd been standing.
He looked between the two locations.
"Again."
Henry frowned.
"You've been doing that for hours."
"I can do it faster."
"You can also pass out faster."
Brook ignored him.
He placed his hand against the pillar.
Another mark appeared.
Then another.
And another.
Three white symbols now existed around the courtyard.
Brook stared at them.
Sera walked over.
"You've figured out how to place more than one."
"Three."
"How many can you maintain?"
Brook shrugged.
"I don't know."
"Then don't find out by killing yourself."
Brook looked at her.
"You're getting bossy."
"I'm learning from Crowley."
Crowley, standing across the courtyard, looked over.
"I heard that."
Sera smiled.
"Good."
Brook laughed.
Then his smile disappeared.
The light around his hand flickered.
He felt it again.
That strange emptiness.
He looked at Henry.
Henry was smiling.
Sera was smiling.
Crowley was watching.
They were there.
They were real.
But for a moment, Brook couldn't remember what Henry had said five seconds earlier.
He stared at him.
Henry noticed.
"What?"
Brook blinked.
"Nothing."
"You forgot something."
Brook looked away.
"I was distracted."
Henry didn't believe him.
But he didn't push.
Not yet.
That afternoon, the monastery doors opened.
Elias entered carrying a bundle of supplies.
"We have a problem."
Henry stood.
"What?"
"Someone is coming."
Brook reached for his sword.
"Who?"
Elias dropped the supplies onto the table.
"Refugees."
Sera frowned.
"From where?"
"A settlement south of here."
"How many?"
"Thirty-seven."
Henry looked confused.
"Why is that a problem?"
Elias looked toward Brook.
"They're being followed."
The room went quiet.
"By what?" Brook asked.
Elias shook his head.
"They didn't know."
Crowley stood.
"Where are they?"
"Half a mile from the monastery."
Crowley grabbed his weapon.
"Get everyone inside."
Brook followed.
The refugees appeared through the snow twenty minutes later.
They were exhausted.
Children.
Old people.
Injured soldiers.
Mothers carrying babies.
A man collapsed the moment he crossed the monastery entrance.
Henry caught him.
"Easy."
The man looked up.
"Please…"
His voice broke.
"Don't let them take us."
Brook crouched beside him.
"Who?"
The man looked behind him.
"They came at night."
"Who did?"
"I don't know."
Brook looked at Elias.
"How many?"
The man shook his head.
"Too many."
Sera began treating the injured.
Henry helped carry people inside.
Crowley stood at the entrance.
Brook noticed him watching the forest.
"You see something?"
Crowley nodded.
"Yes."
"What?"
"Nothing yet."
Brook looked at the snow.
"Then why are you worried?"
Crowley looked at him.
"Because nothing is sometimes worse."
A distant sound echoed through the mountains.
One horn.
Then another.
Then another.
The refugees began panicking.
The children cried.
Brook stood.
"Everyone stay inside."
Henry looked at him.
"Brook—"
"I'm going."
Crowley grabbed his shoulder.
"No."
Brook turned.
"They're coming."
"I know."
"Then we need to stop them."
Crowley shook his head.
"You're protecting the people inside."
Brook frowned.
"What about you?"
"I'll handle the outside."
Brook stared at him.
"You can't fight an army alone."
Crowley smiled.
"I don't intend to."
The first attackers appeared at the edge of the forest.
Then twenty.
Then fifty.
Then more.
They weren't Abominations.
They were human.
Soldiers.
Their armor was dark.
Their weapons carried strange symbols.
At their center stood a man wearing a red cloak.
He stepped forward.
"We have come for the refugees."
Crowley stood alone outside the monastery.
"No."
The man smiled.
"Move."
"No."
The man looked past him.
"You're protecting people who aren't yours."
Crowley drew his sword.
"Everyone is mine."
The man laughed.
"Then die with them."
The soldiers charged.
Crowley moved.
The first soldier swung.
Crowley blocked.
Another attacked.
Crowley ducked.
His blade cut across the man's armor.
A third came from behind.
Crowley spun.
The sword stopped inches from his face.
Crowley caught the attacker's wrist.
He broke the man's weapon.
Then kicked him away.
Five more rushed him.
Crowley moved between them.
His sword flashed.
One fell.
Another.
Another.
He wasn't fighting recklessly.
He was controlling the battlefield.
But there were too many.
Brook watched from the monastery entrance.
Henry stood beside him.
"He's going to get surrounded."
Brook gripped his sword.
"I know."
"Then go."
Brook looked at him.
"Crowley told me to stay."
Henry smiled.
"Since when do you listen?"
Brook laughed.
Then the smile disappeared.
More soldiers appeared.
Hundreds.
Brook's eyes widened.
"That's too many."
Sera came beside them.
"Then we help."
Brook looked at the refugees.
"We can't leave them."
Henry looked at him.
"We don't have to."
Brook understood.
He looked toward the refugees.
Then toward the battlefield.
He closed his eyes.
The Archangel Source stirred.
Michael's voice echoed faintly.
Protect.
Brook opened his eyes.
White energy surrounded his body.
He raised his hand.
A small mark appeared on the monastery wall.
Then another near Crowley.
Brook disappeared.
Crowley was surrounded.
Seven soldiers attacked simultaneously.
He blocked three.
The fourth struck his side.
Blood appeared.
Crowley staggered.
Then—
Flash.
Brook appeared beside him.
His sword struck the attacker.
The soldier flew backward.
Crowley looked at him.
"I told you to stay inside."
Brook smiled.
"I ignored you."
Crowley sighed.
"Of course."
The soldiers charged.
Brook raised his hand.
A white barrier appeared.
The impact sent a shockwave through the snow.
Brook's feet slid backward.
Crowley stood beside him.
"That's new."
Brook gritted his teeth.
"Not very strong."
"Then make it stronger."
Brook pushed more power into it.
The barrier expanded.
The soldiers were forced back.
Brook's arms began shaking.
"That's all I've got."
Crowley looked at him.
"Then that's enough."
They attacked together.
Brook marked the ground.
Flash.
He disappeared.
He reappeared behind one soldier.
Strike.
Flash.
Another mark.
Strike.
Flash.
Crowley moved through the openings Brook created.
The two fought like they'd trained together for years.
Brook teleported short distances.
Crowley controlled the center.
The soldiers began falling back.
The red-cloaked leader watched.
His expression changed.
"Three Sources…"
Brook froze.
The leader smiled.
"So the rumors were true."
Brook looked at him.
"You know me?"
"I know what you are."
The man's eyes moved to Brook's chest.
"You're the anomaly."
Brook's expression hardened.
The leader raised his hand.
Every soldier stepped backward.
Then they removed small metal devices from their belts.
Crowley looked at them.
"Brook."
"I see them."
The devices began glowing.
Sera shouted from the monastery:
"GET DOWN!"
Brook and Crowley dropped.
The devices exploded.
A massive wave of energy tore across the battlefield.
Brook raised his barrier.
It shattered instantly.
The force threw him backward.
He crashed through a stone wall.
Crowley was thrown in the opposite direction.
The monastery shook.
People screamed inside.
Brook pushed himself up.
Blood ran down his forehead.
His ears were ringing.
He couldn't hear anything.
Then he saw a child.
A little girl.
She had been thrown from the monastery entrance.
She was lying in the snow.
A soldier was walking toward her.
Brook's body moved before he could think.
He placed his hand against the ground.
The mark appeared.
Flash.
He disappeared.
He reappeared beside the girl.
The soldier raised his weapon.
Brook blocked it.
The impact nearly broke his arm.
Brook stared at the soldier.
"Don't."
The soldier attacked again.
Brook blocked.
Again.
Again.
The third strike knocked Brook backward.
The soldier raised his blade.
Brook's eyes flashed white.
The Archangel Source surged.
Brook struck.
The soldier's weapon shattered.
Then Brook placed his hand against the man's chest.
White energy spread through the armor.
The man froze.
Brook expected him to explode.
Instead, the strange darkness surrounding the soldier disappeared.
The man's eyes widened.
He collapsed unconscious.
Brook stared.
He had purified him.
Not killed him.
Michael's voice echoed faintly.
Control.
Brook looked at the little girl.
She was crying.
Brook crouched.
"You're okay."
She stared at him.
"Are you an angel?"
Brook smiled faintly.
"No."
He looked at his hand.
"I'm just Brook."
The battle continued.
Henry and Sera joined the fight.
Henry fought through the soldiers.
Sera covered the courtyard with fog.
Lightning struck from within it.
Elias helped evacuate the refugees.
Crowley confronted the red-cloaked leader.
Their swords collided.
The leader was strong.
Very strong.
Crowley blocked a strike.
The man kicked him backward.
"You've gotten soft."
Crowley's expression changed.
"I've gotten tired."
The man laughed.
"Same thing."
He attacked.
Crowley blocked.
The impact cracked the ground beneath him.
Brook saw it.
"Crowley!"
He moved.
Flash.
Brook appeared between them.
The leader swung.
Brook blocked.
Crowley attacked.
The leader dodged.
Brook marked the ground.
Flash.
He appeared behind the man.
The leader turned too late.
Brook struck.
The man crashed into the snow.
Henry approached.
"That him?"
Brook nodded.
The leader laughed.
"You think this changes anything?"
Brook pointed his sword at him.
"Who sent you?"
The man smiled.
"You're asking the wrong question."
"What question should I ask?"
The man looked at Brook.
"Why are they afraid of you?"
Brook froze.
The leader's smile widened.
"Not because you have three Sources."
He glanced toward the monastery.
"Because one day…"
His eyes returned to Brook.
"…you'll have all six."
Brook's grip tightened.
Crowley stepped forward.
"Enough."
The leader looked at him.
Then smiled.
"You know."
Crowley's expression hardened.
The leader laughed.
"Of course you know."
Brook looked between them.
"What does he mean?"
Crowley didn't answer.
The leader suddenly bit down.
Brook realized what was happening.
"Stop him!"
Too late.
The man collapsed.
Dead.
Brook stared.
Again.
No anger.
No satisfaction.
Just emptiness.
He looked at his hand.
The white energy slowly faded.
Henry approached.
"You okay?"
Brook nodded.
"Yeah."
Henry looked at him.
"You saved that girl."
Brook glanced toward the monastery.
"Yeah."
"How does that feel?"
Brook thought about it.
He wanted to say good.
He wanted to say relieved.
Instead:
"Normal."
Henry's smile disappeared.
Brook noticed.
"What?"
Henry shook his head.
"Nothing."
Brook looked away.
That evening, the refugees were safe.
The surviving soldiers had fled.
The monastery was damaged.
But standing.
Brook sat alone outside.
Snow fell softly.
He stared at the mark on the ground.
He had used it to save the girl.
He had used it to fight.
He had used it without thinking.
Michael appeared in his mind.
Not fully.
Just a presence.
A voice.
You protected without hatred.
Brook closed his eyes.
"Was that the test?"
Silence.
Then:
No.
Brook opened his eyes.
"Then what was it?"
No answer.
Brook smiled faintly.
"Of course."
He looked toward the monastery.
Henry was talking to Sera.
Elias was helping the refugees.
Crowley stood near the entrance.
Brook watched them.
His family.
He placed his hand against the snow.
A tiny white mark appeared.
He stared at it.
One mark.
One step.
He wasn't mastering Michael.
Not yet.
But he was beginning to understand him.
And deep inside Brook's mind, Michael watched silently.
The first test was still ahead.
But Brook had finally begun to walk toward it.
