Chapter 29 - Ally

Winter's head buzzed. She took the opportunity to test her powers. She moved her hand and a strong breeze moved throughout the room. She focused her energy and was able to pull small water particles from the air. She set the water to flames and it evaporated. Winter squinted and a ball of fire formed in her hand. She scrunched her nose, "Elements?" She shook her hand and the flame morphed into a dim white light. Winter snapped and a pen appeared. She dove deeper into her magic. The pen started levitating. She moved it to the table with her powers then snapped and it disappeared. Winter looked at her hands and turned them over. Her magic thrummed inside of her. In response, she reached out to it. Winter closed her eyes and delved into herself, into her magic. She explored it. Winter wanted to see how far she could go. She kept diving but there was no sign of the bottom. She relaxed, let it envelop her. Being in her magic felt familiar, comfortable even. Winter felt at home in it. She had the sense it was greeting her after being dormant for so long. A noise jerked her to the surface of her magic and she opened her eyes, "Winter Knight to the conference room. I repeat, Winter Knight to room 567." Winter ignored it and went back to investigating the unknown within herself when she heard a rattling and the door close. She stood silently. Winter stalked up the stairs. She stopped at the door which was closed and then looked to where the stairs ascended. Her curiosity pulled her to whatever was upstairs, but her magic drew her towards the library. Her curiosity was winning and her magic tugged harder, refusing to be dismissed. She gave up and opened the secret door. There, on the ground in front of her was the book "Stories Untold." Winter picked it up and walked back down the stairs, the door shutting behind her. Winter ran her fingers over the gold lettering of the title again. She remembered the book along with the fact that she never got to read it. How did it find her? Did her magic make it appear without her knowing?

Winter sat down at the table, setting the weighty volume in front of her. She resolved to study it without distraction for the next few hours to keep herself busy. She opened the book and felt her magic jump from the amount of power it sensed stored in the book. Winter flipped through the pages and it had everything from information on each type of magic user to potions to significant history events under the influence of magic users. There were also a general set of rules that the school and anyone able to use magic were instructed to follow. Winter turned the page, wondering why the school had chosen to set none of the rules in place. "If there aren't any rules, what is the dungeon for?" When she thought that, the book displayed the layout of the dungeon. Winter understood then that "Stories Untold" was a book that knew no bounds. She caressed the page imagining all the answers she would be able to receive from this book alone. Winter examined the map of the dungeon and twiddled her fingers. It was not the same as when she was there. The map was outdated. She laughed, "Of course. That would be too easy, getting all the answers delivered to me on a silver platter." Winter garnered what she could from the information in the book. She memorized the rules and the history, imprinted all the maps and facts that she could into her mind. By the time Winter remembered herself, hours already passed. The book told her it was already the next morning. Winter yawned. She walked up the stairs, leaving the book in the secret room. When she walked among the bookshelves in the library, she turned her head. Despite the feeling that someone was watching her, she didn't see anything. Winter was too tired to care who it was and kept moving.

Winter dallied over to her class and slumped over on her desk. Mandy and Layla rushed over to her. Mandy whispered, "What was that? Where did you go?" Winter didn't have the energy to explain. Layla patted Winter's head, noticing how drained she seemed, "Did you hear them call you to the conference room again?" Mandy's face paled, "Please tell us you didn't go and get locked in the dungeon again." Winter shook her head, "I didn't. I went somewhere to avoid getting pulled into that." They nodded, "Are you okay? You look awful." Winter smiled dimly, "I know. I'm fine don't worry." Nelly Terran arrived and the class got quiet. They made eye contact and it was enough for Winter to observe that Nelly was relieved. Winter sighed, drooping over her desk again. The bell rang for lunch. Mandy and Layla practically dragged Winter from her desk to the cafeteria. They set her down at a table and brought her food. Winter stretched and then ate the soup they gave her, "Have you guys heard of a book called 'Stories Untold?'" Mandy looked at her, puzzled, "What does it look like?" Winter snapped her fingers and the book showed up in front of them, "Like this." They attempted to conceal their surprise, "You can do that too?" Winter quirked her head, "Do what?" Mandy swallowed, "Materialize objects." Winter shrugged. Layla glanced at her bracelet before turning her attention over to the book. She reached out to touch it as Winter watched. Layla opened the book, "It's blank." Winter looked over her shoulder, narrowing her eyes to see that the pages were completely bare, "Let me see." She grabbed the book and closed it. When she opened it again the pages were filled to the brim with words and symbols and pictures she hadn't seen the night before. Mandy stared at it, dismayed, "There's a spell on it." Layla brushed her fingers over the page and it turned barren again, "Something that only allows you to use it." Winter eyed them skeptically, "How is that possible? I didn't create it and my magic was just recently awakened. How could someone make it so that it would respond to my magic?" Mandy pulled on her ear, anxiously, "Well, it seems to be a first class magic tool. Maybe it recognized you as its owner on its own." Mandy swallowed and glanced at Layla who said, "I don't know but I wouldn't have it out in the open." Winter nodded, snapping her fingers. The book vanished just as it had appeared. She thought to herself, "Things are still being kept hidden."
