Dawn over Sector 7 brought no warmth, only an iron-gray drizzle that slicked the concrete archways of the Main Colosseum. Moisture hung heavy in the damp air, thick with the sharp smell of ozone, hot copper, and distant refinery exhaust.
By seven in the morning, the outer concourse was already vibrating under the footsteps of thousands of spectators. High-tier cadets in spotless white-and-gold uniforms marched through the security gates, their light-emitting badges flaring proudly—vibrant ambers, brilliant silvers, and deep blues displaying their high CHPower classifications.
In the subterranean holding room beneath the main arena dome, the atmosphere inside Auxiliary Squad 4's prep area was dead quiet.
Jax leaned against a concrete pillar, nervously wrapping thick grip-tape around the handle of his thermal shield. Every time a muffled roar echoed down from the arena above, his hands twitched.
"Section 1 turned this into a broadcast spectacle," Jax grunted, pulling the tape tight until it snapped. "Proctor Vance wasn't kidding. I glanced out the tunnel grate earlier—the entire Directorate council is up in the executive boxes, and Thorne's technical observers have high-density wave scanners mounted on every corner of the ring."
Lyra sat on a crate nearby, her focus rod resting across her knees as she reviewed the holographic tactical maps one last time.
"Thorne bypassed the standard intermediate bracket specifically to put Caine under a microscope," Lyra said, her voice dropping low enough to stay beneath the hum of the ventilation ducts. "Section 2 was just an evaluation. Section 1's Vanguard—Darius and Marcus—is the Directorate's golden standard. If a baseline squad breaks Darius's Level 28 Compressive Radiance, it proves the Directorate's entire ranking metric is flawed. Thorne wants to force Caine to overflow his gloves."
In the darkest corner of the room, Caine sat alone on a wooden bench, pulling his gear bag onto his lap.
He unzipped the padded pouch and drew out the Conductive Weave gloves Silas had spent all night re-engineering. The Grade-3 Shadow-Stalker core fluid had cured into the leather, darkening it to a matte, light-absorbing black that looked almost hollow under the flickering strip lights.
Caine slid his right hand into the glove.
The moment his skin made contact with the treated inner lining, an agonizing, searing heat instantly flared through his palm—like thrusting his bare hand into a bath of molten lead. The volatile Jahgred fluid reacted to his body heat, actively locking its chemical matrix to absorb any stray kinetic leak.
Caine's jaw tightened, his breathing hitching for a fraction of a second, but he didn't pull back. He gritted his teeth, forcing his fingers all the way into the leather and fastening the heavy industrial wrist strap until the burning settled into a deep, steady throb.
Sixty percent Phase 1 density, Caine reminded himself, flexing his gloved fingers through the blistering heat. No light bleed. No sensor spikes. Just pure, solid mass.
He knew what was at stake. Out past the perimeter wall, his 20,000-credit payout was already quietly securing his family's future, and Maya's tuition was cleared. His mother wouldn't have to break her body on the refinery night shifts anymore. All that was left was surviving the trap Thorne had set in the ring above.
"You good, Caine?" Jax asked, looking over with genuine concern as he noticed Caine's white knuckles.
"I'm ready," Caine replied quietly, standing up and rolling his shoulders to loosen his back.
"Remember the plan," Lyra added, deactivating her holo-slate. "Marcus will try to pin us with his long-range kinetic arcs while Darius takes center stage with Aegis Radiance. Jax holds the frontline thermal barrier to absorb Marcus's opening volley. I'll disrupt their tracking vectors with my focus rod—and the second Darius steps forward expecting a light-based clash, you close the distance."
Before Jax could answer, the heavy steel door at the far end of the tunnel groaned on its hydraulic hinges. A sharp crimson strobe light began pulsing over the doorway, accompanied by a harsh mechanical chime.
"Primary Bracket, Match 1. Auxiliary Squad 4 versus Section 1 Apex Vanguard. All combatants enter Gate 3 immediately."
Jax slapped his own cheeks hard, taking a deep, shaky breath before lifting his heavy thermal shield onto his forearm. "Alright. No turning back now. Let me take the first hit."
Caine walked into the center of the formation, his right hand hanging at his side, the dark matte leather absorbing every ray of ambient light. Beneath his ribs, his CrystalHeart thrummed—a heavy, silent anvil waiting for the gate to drop.
Together, the three Auxiliary cadets stepped out of the shadows and walked down the long concrete tunnel toward the roaring Colosseum.
