Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: G - Returning with the Harvest

An hour later, as the atmospheric energy surge began to dissipate over the northern ruins, the Secondary Observation Outpost's emergency landline established a clear connection to the wall's central defense hub.

Within twenty minutes, the heavy thrum of twin rotors echoed through the dark purple sky as an elite military-grade gunship descended into the outpost's clearing. Its high-intensity floodlights cut through the lingering ozone fog, illuminating the cracked asphalt and the battered concrete buildings.

A squad of fully armored Academy Enforcers spilled out from the side hatches, their high-tier rifles raised in a tactical perimeter sweep. Leading them was Proctor Vance, his heavy grey trench coat sweeping behind him as he stepped onto the gravel.

Vance's sharp eyes took in the scene in an instant: Caine, Jax, and Lyra standing beside a sealed, military-grade containment crate, while three unconscious, heavily bruised Section 1 cadets lay strapped to field stretchers near the outpost's entrance.

"Report," Vance commanded, his deep voice cutting through the mechanical roar of the idling gunship.

Lyra stepped forward, holding her bruised wrist, her expression calm and composed as she delivered the cover story Caine had established.

"Auxiliary Squad 4 was conducting a routine perimeter sweep when we detected an unsanctioned disruption field," Lyra reported clearly. "We tracked the signal to the industrial water treatment facility three miles south. Upon arrival, we discovered Section 1's team overwhelmed by a Dread-Tusk and an accompanying pack of Razor-Claws. The disruption field had overloaded their defense grid. We rendered emergency aid, secured the poached Dread-Tusk core, and fell back to this outpost."

Vance walked slowly over to the stretchers, kneeling beside Julian. He pulled a diagnostic scanner from his coat and touched it to Julian's central chest plate.

The scanner hummed, flashing a series of warning runes before displaying a diagnostic summary: WARNING: INTERNAL CHANNEL COLLAPSE. CORE SHOCK LEVEL 4.

Vance's eyebrow twitched slightly. He stood up, turning to look at the broken pieces of Julian's golden halberd resting in an Enforcer's evidence bag.

"Overwhelmed by a beast pack?" Vance asked, turning his gaze toward Caine, who stood at the back of the group with his hands tucked into his jacket pockets. "Julian's halberd was constructed from Grade-4 military alloy. The clean, torsional fracture on the shaft wasn't caused by a beast's jaws, Cadet Caine. It was snapped by a localized, high-density kinetic shear."

"The Dread-Tusk had an armored hide, Proctor," Caine replied smoothly, meeting Vance's sharp gray eyes without a single flicker of hesitation. "When Julian struck its skull, the blade caught in the bone seam. The beast twisted its head while falling. The leverage snapped the metal."

Vance stared at Caine for several long seconds. The silence between them was heavy, broken only by the continuous hum of the gunship's engines. Vance was a veteran hunter who had seen hundreds of battlefields; he knew a Dread-Tusk's bite did not leave localized shockwave fractures on alloy weapons. He knew Section 1's elite team had not been saved by three baseline failures.

Yet, as he looked at the glowing Dread-Tusk core sitting inside the secure crate—a core worth six hundred thousand credits that was now officially registered under Sector 7's inventory—Vance slowly lowered his diagnostic tablet.

"Secure the core," Vance ordered the Enforcers. "Load the Section 1 casualties onto the medical transport. Auxiliary Squad 4... board the primary cabin. You are returning to the central base for medical evaluation."

As they climbed the ramp into the gunship's interior, Jax leaned close to Caine, keeping his voice down beneath the engine roar.

"Man..." Jax muttered, wiping cold sweat from his forehead. "I don't know what kind of monster you're hiding under that jacket, but if Proctor Vance had pressed any harder, I thought my heart was going to burst."

"Proctor Vance is a practical man," Caine said softly, sitting down on the metallic bench and securing his safety harness. "He cares about results and protocol. As long as the results benefit the Academy, he won't ask questions he doesn't want answered."

Lyra sat down across from them, leaning her head back against the armored wall. She looked at Caine, her hazel eyes reflecting the green interior lights of the cabin.

"But when we get back inside the wall... the Marcus family will know Julian failed. They won't leave this alone." Lyra said

"Let them come," Caine said, looking out the narrow cabin window as the gunship lifted off, watching the dark, ruined landscape of Sector 7 shrink into the night beneath them. "The ruins were just training. The real arena is inside the wall."
