Chapter 11 - A Light That Seeks Guidance

Morning arrived quietly over the Kingdom of Ryūgū.

Golden sunlight poured across the academy grounds, illuminating the sprawling training fields and turning the dew-covered grass into countless shimmering points of light. The morning breeze drifted gently between the buildings, carrying with it the fresh scent of grass and the distant sounds of Elementalists beginning their daily training.

From somewhere across the academy grounds came the occasional crack of an explosion, followed by the shouts of instructors correcting their students.

It was an ordinary morning.

Peaceful.

Almost tranquil.

But for Ryūsei Ryūgū, there was no peace to be found.

He stood alone at the edge of the training grounds, separated from the other students by several meters of open grass. His eyes remained fixed on the empty field before him, yet his mind was nowhere near the academy.

It was still in the forest.

He could remember the sounds.

The screams.

The chaos.

The overwhelming fear that had filled the air.

Most of all, he remembered the feeling of power surging through his body—power that he could barely understand, let alone control.

His fingers slowly curled into a fist.

His other hand drifted toward the black ring resting against his finger.

He brushed his thumb over its surface.

The ring remained silent.

Yet somehow, simply touching it was enough to remind him of everything that had happened.

Ryūsei lowered his gaze.

"...I'm not strong enough."

The words escaped his lips quietly.

He stared at his hand for several seconds.

He knew the truth.

He had power.

There was no denying that anymore.

But power alone wasn't enough.

He had rushed into battles without knowing what he was doing. He had relied on instinct whenever his emotions became overwhelming. When people were in danger, he simply moved without thinking about what would happen afterward.

That recklessness had nearly cost him everything.

And if the same situation happened again...

Would he be able to save anyone?

Ryūsei slowly closed his eyes.

"No."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Not yet."

He opened his eyes again.

If he wanted to become stronger, he needed to understand his own power.

He needed someone who could teach him.

Someone who understood the Light attribute.

And there was only one person at the academy who came to mind.

Ryūsei turned away from the empty training field.

His steps carried him toward the opposite end of the academy grounds.

Professor Hexio stood near one of the training field's stone markers, holding several documents in one hand.

As usual, his appearance was composed.

His academy coat moved gently with the morning breeze, while his glasses reflected the sunlight whenever he turned his head. He appeared completely absorbed in the documents before him, occasionally making a note with a pen.

He seemed unaware of the student approaching from behind.

"Professor."

Hexio stopped reading.

His eyes lifted from the documents.

"...Ryūsei."

His voice was calm, though the slight narrowing of his eyes revealed that he had already noticed something unusual about the boy.

Ryūsei stopped several steps away.

Hexio lowered the documents slightly.

"I heard about the quest."

There was a short pause.

"Quite the... unexpected outcome."

Ryūsei immediately scratched the back of his head.

"Yeah... about that."

He gave an awkward smile.

"Sorry."

Hexio stared at him.

"Taking another student's assigned mission without even reading the name on the quest scroll."

His expression remained calm.

"Do you realize how reckless that was?"

Ryūsei's smile disappeared.

"...I do now."

Hexio sighed.

"Good."

The professor returned his attention to the documents.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Ryūsei looked at him.

Then he took a slow breath.

"Professor..."

Hexio looked up again.

"I need your help."

Something in Ryūsei's voice made Hexio's expression change.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"Go on."

Ryūsei stepped forward.

"I want you to train me."

The breeze continued to move across the field.

Hexio said nothing.

His eyes remained on Ryūsei.

The request was simple.

Yet the determination behind it was anything but.

After several seconds, Hexio adjusted his glasses.

"...No."

The answer came immediately.

Firm.

Ryūsei froze.

"...Why?"

Hexio lowered the documents to his side.

"You lack control."

His voice remained calm, but every word carried weight.

"Your Elemental Art is unstable. You don't fully understand its nature, and you haven't demonstrated sufficient control over the power you're already capable of producing."

He paused.

"Training you without first understanding the limits of your ability would be inefficient."

Hexio's eyes sharpened.

"And dangerous."

Ryūsei clenched his fists.

"I don't care if it's dangerous."

"That," Hexio replied, "is exactly the problem."

He turned fully toward Ryūsei.

"You rush into situations without thinking."

Ryūsei remained silent.

"You act on impulse whenever someone is in danger."

Another pause.

"And now you're asking for more power to support that recklessness."

Each statement struck harder than the last.

Hexio's gaze remained unwavering.

"You're not ready."

The words settled heavily between them.

Ryūsei lowered his head.

For several moments, he simply stood there.

Then his fingers tightened.

"...Then make me ready."

Hexio's eyes narrowed slightly.

Ryūsei raised his head.

"You're the only Light-attribute Elementalist I know who can teach me."

His voice was more determined now.

"If I can't learn from you, then I don't know where else I'm supposed to go."

Hexio remained silent.

Ryūsei waited.

Nothing.

No answer.

The silence stretched between them.

Eventually, Ryūsei exhaled.

"...I see."

He turned slightly.

Perhaps he had expected this.

Perhaps part of him had known that asking wouldn't be enough.

He took one step.

Then stopped.

An idea entered his mind.

Ryūsei slowly turned around.

"Then fight me."

Hexio's eyes flickered.

"...What?"

Ryūsei faced him directly.

"A duel."

The professor stared at him.

"If I win," Ryūsei said, "you train me."

"And if you lose?"

Ryūsei didn't hesitate.

"Then I'll accept your decision."

Hexio studied him carefully.

He wasn't looking at Ryūsei's expression.

He was studying his resolve.

The determination in his eyes.

The fact that he was willing to challenge someone vastly more experienced simply because he refused to give up.

The wind moved through the grass between them.

At last, Hexio adjusted his glasses.

"...Very well."

Ryūsei's eyes widened slightly.

"I'll accept your challenge."

The training field was cleared within minutes.

News of the duel spread through the academy far faster than either of them expected.

A student challenging a professor was already unusual.

A student challenging Professor Hexio was something else entirely.

Before long, several students had gathered around the outer edge of the training field.

Among them were Shizen, Yuki, Shadow, and Kayosha.

Shizen stood with his arms crossed, his usual casual expression replaced by one of genuine interest.

Yuki remained quiet, watching the center of the field carefully.

Shadow's expression was unusually serious.

Kayosha, however, stood closest to the boundary.

Her hands were tightly clasped together against her chest.

Her bright eyes remained fixed on Ryūsei.

"...Ryūsei."

At the center of the field, Ryūsei stood several meters away from Professor Hexio.

The morning sunlight illuminated the battlefield.

The breeze had grown quieter.

Even the spectators seemed to understand that this was no ordinary training match.

Hexio adjusted his stance.

"This is not a game."

His voice carried across the field.

"If you hesitate, you will lose."

Ryūsei nodded.

"I know."

He lowered his center of gravity.

His breathing slowed.

His eyes remained fixed on Hexio.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Hexio raised one hand.

"Begin."

Ryūsei moved immediately.

His feet slammed against the ground as he launched himself forward.

He didn't hesitate.

He didn't wait.

He attacked.

"Meteor Dragon: Photon Blade!"

Light exploded into existence around his hand.

Brilliant energy gathered around his fingers before rapidly taking shape.

A sword of pure light formed within his grasp.

Its radiant blade illuminated the surrounding grass.

Ryūsei tightened his grip and swung.

The attack came directly toward Hexio.

Yet the professor didn't move.

Not immediately.

Only when the blade was a fraction away from reaching him did Hexio shift his body.

One step.

That was all.

Ryūsei's blade cut through empty air.

Hexio had already moved beside him.

"...Too direct."

Ryūsei's eyes widened.

He immediately turned.

But Hexio was already there.

The professor raised his palm.

"Too slow."

THUD!

The palm strike struck Ryūsei squarely in the chest.

His body flew backward.

He skidded several meters across the dirt before digging his heels into the ground and forcing himself to stop.

Ryūsei coughed.

"...Fast."

Hexio lowered his hand.

"Again."

Ryūsei gritted his teeth.

He pushed himself upright.

Then charged.

This time, he changed his approach.

He feinted to the left.

At the last moment, he shifted his weight and swung the Photon Blade from the opposite direction.

Hexio avoided it.

Ryūsei immediately adjusted.

He followed with another slash.

Then another.

He changed the angle of his attack halfway through the movement.

His blade cut through the space around Hexio from multiple directions.

But none of them connected.

Hexio moved effortlessly.

One step.

A turn of his shoulder.

A slight tilt of his head.

Every attack passed harmlessly by.

Ryūsei's breathing grew heavier.

"Your movements are predictable," Hexio said.

Ryūsei swung again.

Hexio avoided it.

"You rely too heavily on raw instinct."

Ryūsei's teeth clenched.

"Then I'll just have to hit you harder!"

He pushed himself forward.

His speed increased.

The ground cracked beneath his foot as he accelerated.

The Photon Blade shone brighter.

He swung.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each attack came faster than the previous one.

The force behind his strikes caused the surrounding air to tremble.

Dust rose beneath their feet.

Yet Hexio continued to evade him.

Then, during one of Ryūsei's strikes, Hexio raised two fingers.

CLANG!

The Photon Blade stopped.

Ryūsei's eyes widened.

Hexio had caught the edge of the blade between two fingers.

The radiant weapon trembled violently in Ryūsei's hand.

"Your power is real," Hexio said.

His eyes remained fixed on Ryūsei.

"But it lacks purpose."

He flicked his fingers.

The force sent Ryūsei flying backward.

THUD!

His body struck the ground.

The field fell silent.

Kayosha took an involuntary step forward.

"...Ryūsei..."

Ryūsei remained on the ground for a moment.

His breathing was rough.

His body ached.

Yet he slowly pushed himself up.

His arms trembled.

His knees shook.

But he stood.

"...I'm not done yet."

The black ring on his finger pulsed faintly.

Ryūsei looked down at it for a brief moment.

Then his gaze returned to Hexio.

His breathing gradually steadied.

He tightened his grip around the Photon Blade.

"I don't need perfect control..."

Light began gathering around his body again.

"But I won't lose either!"

The Photon Blade reformed.

This time, its radiance was stronger.

The light around the blade shimmered differently.

Hexio's eyes narrowed.

"...Interesting."

Ryūsei charged again.

But something had changed.

He wasn't moving blindly anymore.

His pace was slower.

More deliberate.

Instead of immediately swinging, he watched.

He studied Hexio's posture.

His feet.

His shoulders.

The direction of his gaze.

Ryūsei remembered what Hexio had said.

Your movements are predictable.

So he changed them.

He stopped trying to overwhelm his opponent with speed.

Instead, he waited.

He watched.

He adjusted.

Hexio shifted slightly.

Ryūsei recognized the movement.

He waited until the professor committed to his dodge.

Then—

Ryūsei struck.

SLASH!

Hexio raised his hand.

But the Photon Blade passed close enough to catch the fabric of his sleeve.

A thin tear appeared across the coat.

The professor stepped backward.

Silence descended upon the field.

Ryūsei stared at the torn sleeve.

Then at Hexio.

His chest rose and fell rapidly.

A small smile appeared on his face.

Hexio glanced at the damaged fabric.

For the first time since the duel began, his expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

"...You've changed your rhythm."

Ryūsei breathed heavily.

"...I'm learning."

The wind passed through the field again.

The torn fabric of Hexio's sleeve fluttered gently.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Hexio slowly raised his hand.

The atmosphere changed.

The air seemed to become heavier.

Denser.

Even the light surrounding the battlefield appeared to bend toward him.

The spectators immediately noticed.

Yuki's eyes narrowed.

"...He's getting serious."

Shizen clicked his tongue.

"About time."

Kayosha's hands tightened against her chest.

"...Ryūsei."

Ryūsei remained in place.

His smile disappeared.

He could feel it.

The pressure radiating from Hexio was completely different from before.

Hexio had been holding back.

Until now.

Particles of light began gathering around his fingertips.

Unlike Ryūsei's unstable radiance, Hexio's light moved with absolute precision.

Each particle remained exactly where he intended it to be.

Nothing was wasted.

Nothing wandered.

Nothing fluctuated.

It was pure control.

"You've shown me your resolve," Hexio said.

His voice was calm.

"But resolve alone is not enough."

The light around his hand intensified.

"Now..."

The surrounding air vibrated.

"I'll show you the difference between power and mastery."

Hexio moved his hand.

There was no unnecessary motion.

No dramatic flourish.

Just precision.

"Light Art: Radiant Array."

For one brief moment—

Nothing happened.

Then the sky above the battlefield began to glow.

Ryūsei looked upward.

His eyes widened.

One beam of light appeared behind Hexio.

Then another.

Then another.

Within seconds, dozens of radiant weapons hovered behind the professor.

Then hundreds.

They filled the sky like a massive constellation made entirely of concentrated light.

Each beam was narrow.

Dense.

Perfectly controlled.

And every single one was pointed toward Ryūsei.

Ryūsei's expression stiffened.

"...What the—"

Hexio lowered his hand.

"Go."

The entire battlefield exploded.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH—!

Hundreds of beams descended from the sky.

They rained down with terrifying speed, tearing through the training field in a blinding storm of light.

Ryūsei reacted on instinct.

He dashed sideways.

BOOM!

The ground where he had been standing erupted.

Another beam descended.

Ryūsei raised his Photon Blade.

CLANG!

The beam struck the blade.

The force nearly tore the weapon from his hand.

Ryūsei gritted his teeth.

"Too strong...!"

Another beam came from the side.

He barely ducked beneath it.

The attack passed over his head and carved a glowing scar into the ground behind him.

Then another.

Ryūsei jumped backward.

Another beam struck beneath his feet.

BOOM!

The explosion threw him into the air.

He twisted his body and landed awkwardly.

Before he could regain his balance—

Three beams descended simultaneously.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Ryūsei crossed his Photon Blade in front of himself.

The impact sent him sliding backward.

His arms shook violently.

"Ghh...!"

The barrage continued.

There was no pause.

No opening.

No time to think.

Ryūsei ran.

He dodged left.

Then right.

He blocked one beam.

Deflected another.

Jumped over a third.

But the attacks were coming from every direction.

Hexio wasn't simply firing randomly.

Every beam forced Ryūsei into a specific position.

Every dodge placed him directly into the path of another attack.

Ryūsei realized it too late.

BOOM!

A beam struck his shoulder.

"—GHK!"

Pain exploded through his body.

He staggered.

Another beam struck the ground beside him.

The shockwave threw him sideways.

He rolled across the dirt.

Before he could rise, three more beams descended.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The battlefield shook violently.

Dust and smoke swallowed the area.

The spectators could barely see Ryūsei anymore.

Kayosha's eyes widened.

"Ryūsei!"

She moved toward the boundary.

Shizen quickly raised an arm.

"Wait."

"But—"

"He's still moving."

Inside the smoke, Ryūsei pushed himself forward.

His body screamed at him to stop.

His shoulder burned.

His arms were numb.

His legs felt like they could collapse at any moment.

But he kept moving.

"...Move."

Another beam descended.

Ryūsei threw himself sideways.

The attack struck behind him.

"Move!"

Another.

He blocked it.

The Photon Blade shook violently.

"Move!"

Another beam struck his side.

THUD!

His body was thrown across the field.

He rolled several times before finally stopping.

His hands dug into the dirt.

He tried to stand.

His knees buckled.

He forced them straight again.

Then—

Another barrage descended.

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

Light consumed the battlefield.

Ryūsei couldn't keep up.

One beam struck his shoulder.

Another grazed his side.

Then three beams descended simultaneously.

BOOOOOOM!

"—GHK!!"

His body slammed into the ground.

The Photon Blade flickered.

Its radiant edge weakened.

Then—

It disappeared.

Silence finally returned.

Smoke drifted slowly across the ruined training field.

Dust settled over the grass.

The ground was covered with craters and glowing scars left behind by Hexio's attack.

At the center of the destruction, Ryūsei remained on one knee.

His head hung low.

His chest rose and fell violently as he struggled to breathe.

His Photon Blade was gone.

Burn marks covered parts of his clothing.

Small cuts ran along his arms and face.

His hands trembled.

Across from him stood Professor Hexio.

Not a single mark had appeared on him.

His coat remained almost completely untouched.

His expression was calm.

"...That," Hexio said quietly, "is control."

Ryūsei slowly raised his head.

He looked at Hexio.

For the first time, he understood.

This wasn't simply a difference in power.

They possessed the same elemental attribute.

Both could manipulate light.

Both could create devastating attacks.

But Hexio didn't waste anything.

Every movement had a purpose.

Every spell had a structure.

Every attack went exactly where he wanted it to go.

Ryūsei stared at him in awe.

"...That was..."

He swallowed.

"...Amazing."

Hexio said nothing.

Ryūsei looked down at his trembling hand.

A faint glow remained around his fingers.

"...I couldn't even see half of those attacks."

He slowly closed his hand.

"Same element."

His eyes lifted toward Hexio.

"Same light."

He took a breath.

"...But completely different."

Ryūsei forced himself upright.

His muscles screamed in protest.

Every movement hurt.

His shoulder felt as though it had been struck by a hammer, and his breathing remained uneven.

Yet he stood.

One step.

Then another.

He slowly approached Hexio.

The professor watched without saying anything.

Ryūsei stopped several meters away.

"I don't care if I'm weak right now."

Hexio's eyes remained on him.

"I don't care if I can't control my power yet."

Ryūsei took another step.

"I don't care how long it takes."

His voice grew stronger.

"I'll learn."

Another step.

"I'll train."

Another.

"I'll keep fighting until I understand this power."

He stopped.

Then Ryūsei lowered himself.

Not into a fighting stance.

Instead, he dropped onto one knee.

The spectators fell silent.

Kayosha's eyes widened.

Shizen blinked.

Even Yuki's expression softened with surprise.

Ryūsei lowered his head.

"...Please."

His voice was clear.

Sincere.

"...Teach me."

The wind moved gently through the ruined field.

Ryūsei kept his head lowered.

"I want to learn how to use this power properly."

His fingers tightened against his palm.

"I want to become stronger."

His voice trembled slightly.

"So I can protect people."

He paused.

"So I won't be too late again."

The last words came out quieter.

"...So I won't regret it again."

Silence.

No one spoke.

Even the distant sounds of training elsewhere in the academy seemed to disappear.

Professor Hexio looked down at him.

He saw the same boy who had recklessly rushed into danger.

The same boy who lacked control.

The same boy who had relied almost entirely on instinct.

But he also saw something else.

Resolve.

Ryūsei had lost the duel.

Completely.

Yet despite being overwhelmed, despite being injured and exhausted, he had stood back up.

He hadn't asked Hexio to accept his weakness.

He had asked him to teach him how to overcome it.

Hexio slowly exhaled.

"...You lost the duel."

Ryūsei nodded.

"I know."

"And yet you still ask me to train you."

"...Yes."

Another silence followed.

Hexio stepped forward.

His footsteps were quiet against the damaged ground.

He stopped directly in front of Ryūsei.

"Look at me."

Ryūsei lifted his head.

Their eyes met.

For several seconds, Hexio said nothing.

Then he adjusted his glasses.

"...Very well."

Ryūsei's eyes widened.

"I will train you."

The words took a moment to register.

"...Really?"

A faint smile appeared on Ryūsei's face.

From the sidelines, Kayosha's expression immediately brightened.

Shizen smirked.

"Knew it."

Yuki crossed her arms, though a faint look of approval appeared in her eyes.

Shadow let out a quiet chuckle.

"That was more dramatic than I expected."

Ryūsei almost laughed.

But Hexio raised a hand.

"Don't misunderstand."

His usual strict tone had returned.

"You didn't win."

Ryūsei's smile became slightly awkward.

"I know."

"I simply chose to accept you as a student."

Hexio adjusted his glasses again.

"Because you asked properly."

Ryūsei blinked.

Then he smiled.

"...I'll take it."

Hexio turned away.

"Training begins tomorrow."

He began walking toward the academy buildings.

"Dawn."

Ryūsei watched him.

Hexio stopped briefly without turning around.

"And don't be late."

Ryūsei's expression became serious.

"I won't."

Hexio continued walking.

Ryūsei remained in the center of the damaged field.

He slowly looked down at his hand.

A faint light flickered between his fingers.

It was unstable.

Incomplete.

Weak compared to the power Hexio had demonstrated.

But Ryūsei no longer looked at it with frustration.

He looked at it with determination.

For the first time, he had someone who could show him how to control it.

For the first time, he had a path forward.

The road ahead would undoubtedly be difficult.

He would fail.

He would struggle.

There would be moments when his power refused to obey him.

But that no longer frightened him.

Because now he understood something important.

Strength wasn't simply about possessing overwhelming power.

It was about knowing how to wield it.

How to control it.

And, more importantly—

Why to use it.

Ryūsei slowly closed his hand.

The faint light disappeared between his fingers.

A small smile formed on his face.

"This time..."

He looked toward the rising sun.

"I won't waste it."

And beneath the golden morning sky of the Kingdom of Ryūgū, Ryūsei Ryūgū took his first true step toward mastering the power of light.
