Chapter 188 - Chapter 188: The Foundations of the Forge

The Heavenly Forge Scripture Pavilion was unlike any other martial library Fang Lin had ever visited.

Located on a quiet, jutting cliff face near the middle peak, the pavilion was carved directly into the dark granite of the mountain. There were no grand statues of ancient grandmasters guarding the entrance, nor were there the lingering auras of aggressive sword intents. Instead, the air smelled of dry parchment, metallic ink, and the faint, lingering scent of refined soot.

Fang Lin walked up the stone steps, his footsteps echoing in the quiet morning air. It was the day after his practical exam, and the dark grey iron badge pinned to his chest felt unusually heavy.

An elderly Pavilion Guardian sat behind a wide stone desk near the entrance. The old man was hunched over a brass magnifying glass, meticulously inspecting the spiritual circuitry etched into a damaged formation plate. He didn't even look up as Fang Lin approached.

Fang Lin unpinned the dark grey badge and placed it gently on the desk.

The Guardian's eyes flicked to the badge, noting the specific hammer-and-mountain insignia of an outer division disciple. He waved a frail, ash-stained hand toward the massive iron doors behind him.

"First floor only, brat. Don't touch the sealed jade slips, and if you drop a bamboo scroll, I'll melt your fingers down for slag."

"Understood, Senior," Fang Lin replied respectfully, pinning the badge back to his robe.

He pushed open the heavy iron doors and stepped into the repository.

The first floor of the Scripture Pavilion was a sprawling cavern, illuminated by floating orbs of soft, yellow earth-fire. Endless rows of stone bookshelves stretched out before him, packed with thousands of jade slips, bound leather grimoires, and ancient bamboo scrolls.

This place was entirely dedicated to the Dao of Equipment.

Fang Lin began walking down the aisles. He passed by sections labeled *[Flying Sword Schematics]*, *[Basic Defensive Arrays]*, and *[Elemental Weapon Inscriptions]*. He saw several outer disciples huddled in the corners, furiously copying down flashy, complex diagrams of fiery broadswords and frost-laced sabers.

Fang Lin ignored them all.

He didn't need a specific schematic. His combat style was already perfectly lethal. What he lacked was the fundamental bridge between his brutal, mortal hammer control and the intricate world of cultivator refinement. He needed to understand how the spiritual energy of this world interacted with the iron he shaped.

He navigated toward the very back of the cavern, where the dust lay thickest, until he found the section labeled *[Foundational Theories]*.

After browsing the titles for half an hour, he selected two worn jade slips. The first was titled *The Thousand-Fold Spiritual Iron Record*, and the second was *The Primer of Earth-Fire Tempering*.

Carved into the outer walls of the pavilion were dozens of small, isolated reading caves, designed to block out sound and ambient Qi so disciples could focus entirely on their studies. Fang Lin claimed an empty cave, sat cross-legged on the cold stone floor, and pressed the first jade slip to his forehead.

He did not channel his spiritual energy into the slip like a normal cultivator. Instead, he gently touched it with a sliver of his Peak-Solid Soul.

Immediately, a flood of text and complex diagrams rushed into his mind. For an ordinary outer disciple at the Qi Conjunction or early Spirit Foundation realm, processing the dense, theoretical jargon of the *Spiritual Iron Record* would take weeks of intense, headache-inducing study.

For Fang Lin, whose soul was strong enough to suppress Core Formation experts, it was like reading a children's primer.

His monstrous comprehension speed ripped through the text, absorbing, cataloging, and analyzing every single principle in a matter of hours. Externally, he remained perfectly still, his eyes closed, giving the perfect impression of a slow, struggling rogue cultivator trying to decipher difficult text. Internally, his mind was a roaring forge of simulation and realization.

As he read, the fundamental difference between mortal blacksmithing and cultivator forging became jarringly clear.

He had originally assumed that forging a spiritual weapon meant forcing one's Qi into the metal with heavy strikes, literally hammering the energy into the steel. But *The Thousand-Fold Spiritual Iron Record* shattered that crude assumption.

Qi was an energy, a living flow. It was not a physical material. Trying to hammer it into metal would only result in violent rejection, causing the weapon to shatter upon tempering.

Instead, the manual detailed the true art of refinement: creating pathways.

The purpose of the hammer was not to force energy in, but to align the internal structure of the ore. Through precise, rhythmic physical strikes, a refiner folded the impurities out of the metal while simultaneously forging microscopic "spiritual veins" inside the iron. These veins acted just like the meridians in a cultivator's body.

Once these microscopic veins were perfectly structured, a cultivator's Qi could flow naturally into the weapon, merging with it rather than fighting it. The purer the strikes, the cleaner the veins. The cleaner the veins, the higher the grade of the artifact.

Fang Lin opened his eyes in the dim light of the reading cave, a deep sense of clarity washing over him.

He mentally mapped the theories he had just read onto his own bodily capabilities. To forge microscopic spiritual veins required a level of physical precision and muscle control that most cultivators found maddeningly difficult. They relied on complex Qi-arrays to force the metal into alignment because their bodies simply weren't precise enough.

But Fang Lin had the Asura Flesh.

His control over his own muscle fibers, down to the cellular level, was absolute. He didn't need external arrays to align the metal. He could simply hit it with such terrifying, unyielding perfection that the spiritual veins would form naturally under his hammer.

He spent the rest of the afternoon absorbing *The Primer of Earth-Fire Tempering*, learning the standard methods of using ambient furnace arrays to soften spirit ores without relying on an internal fire core.

By the time sunset painted the sky outside the pavilion in shades of deep purple and blood red, Fang Lin was finished. He returned the jade slips to their dusty shelves, completely memorized.

He walked out of the Scripture Pavilion, his mind brimming with a perfect, theoretical understanding of the craft. Now, all he needed was to secure a private forge in the lower division to test if his physical perfection could replicate the delicate Qi-forging described in the texts.

As he walked down the winding mountain path back toward his quarters, a sudden, strange presence stirred deep within his glabella.

It came from the Ancient Spatial Furnace resting silently within his Spiritual Sea. The Dark Flame Spirit, which had remained dormant since he broke through, awakened. Without causing a single physical ripple or change to the bronze furnace itself, an ancient, arrogant voice echoed directly into his mind.

*Such crude, primitive theories,* the voice sneered, dripping with disdain.

Fang Lin's footsteps didn't falter, though his eyes narrowed slightly. *You are awake.*

*I am always awake when fire is involved,* the Dark Flame Spirit retorted. *Those human manuals you just read... they treat fire like a tool. Like a blunt instrument to simply soften metal. Pathetic.*

*It is the foundation of their Dao,* Fang Lin replied coldly.

*It is garbage,* the spirit retorted. *Let me out when you find this 'forge' of yours, Loud-Boy. I will show you what true, innate fire control can do to those pathetic microscopic veins you want to build.*
