With most of the zombies gone from their way back, the walk is much smoother than their way out, allowing the two to return to their destination without much of a hassle. Sure, there are still zombies walking around, but they aren't even a danger, as Kyosei easily dispatched them.
"Welcome back, guys. How's the situation below?" Mr. Leo asked, wanting to probe and learn what the two have uncovered.
Kyosei and Souichi quickly relayed all of what they had seen, what they discovered, and even the survivors running out to the zombies. Souichi thought that Kyosei would intentionally hide the information regarding the new survivors, but Kyosei didn't hide anything; he told them everything about those people.
"I see. So troublemakers. Although I am glad they survived, I agree not to meet up with them. Their reckless actions are enough to drive the situation so bad, I don't even want to think about it," Mr. Leo shook his head.
"True. We already have a lot of people in our group, with just us, adding more people will just increase the issues," Miyuki nodded.
"Does that mean there is no need for us to unnecessarily rescue or join another group of survivors at this point? Not even new members or potential helpers?" Okabe frowned. It seems the guy is already thinking of long-term group members.
"It doesn't mean we will not allow anyone to join; it is just that, at the moment, we are in more danger and trouble than adding new people to join will get our issues more complicated. We can just think of that once we have already figured out everything and ensured that our safety will be foolproof, and we will not die anytime soon. Anyways, the bus key is not present in the faculty room at all, and we will not be able to make this ride fully ours at this point," Kyosei quickly returned their conversation to their getaway vehicle.
"Couldn't we just hotwire it? I downloaded a few videos on how to hotwire a car on my laptop; it might help," Nanami suggested.
"That would be great if the school bus is an older model, but the school buses we have right now are the newer models, and there is no way to make it run without the right keys. Hotwiring it is not a guarantee band-aid solution either, so no," Mr. Leo shook his head.
Souichi pulled out the keys he grabbed from the faculty from the backpack. "If the bus is off-limits, we can use other cars instead. We have plenty of keys here that the teachers left behind in the faculty room. Perhaps Mr. Leo and Mrs. Haruna also have their keys here?"
"Ah...my key is indeed there. Can you hand the one with the mola-mola fish keychain?"
"Mola-Mola?" Souichi frowned. It seems he has no idea about it.
"The one with a stupid-looking fish keychain, brother," Nanami pointed out.
"Ah...sorry. I was not familiar with the term mola-mola. I know its name is the Sunfish, though..." Souichi apologized as he handed over the keys with the mola-mola keychain.
"So, what's the decision? Should we go with the bus still or should we go and get a car that isn't the bus?" Kyosei asked.
Mr, Leo scratched his head. "As much as using the other cars, the school bus is the best option for all of us. Remember the zombies gathering and running at night? We will easily get overwhelmed with the regular car, not to mention that the windshields can be broken easily. If they get broken while we are being chased on the road, then we are dead meat by then," Mr. Leo quickly denied the idea.
Kyosei rubbed his chin and nodded in agreement. "You have a point, Mr. Leo. With a bus, we can be safe since the zombies will be near the wheels instead of the windows, and the doors can be blocked easily. But I don't think it is a good car for navigating the roads right now. I can guess that the roads by now are getting congested with accidents and various traffic now."
"True, but will we get any car that are big enough to load all of us in one go? After all, I don't want to separate anyone in another car and at this point, being together in a single vehicle is a much safer choice for me."
Kyosei sighed. "Well, Mr. Leo. Considering that you are against multiple vehicles and smaller ones, there must be a spare key right? Relying on a key that might not be around since the one who holds it has wandered off, that is something we can consider, correct? And besides, a spare key is always kept in case issues like losing the main key happened. There should be a backup that maybe the faculty or the driver knows?"
Before Mr. Leo can say anything, Mrs. Haruna answered Kyosei's question related to the spare key.
"If we are talking about spare keys, the security office should have one kept with them, though I don't know if they store spare keys for vehicles; they should have spare keys for the gates and other doors that are locked around. Of course, you guys can also check the transportation office. That's where the school buses are being maintained and checked for defects."
Okabe, who is just listening on the sidelines, rose to his feet. "Right! The transportation office! I knew I was forgetting something! Those spare keys might be there! We might even find a few jerry cans with fuel for the bus and maybe spare wheels as well!"
"You sure about this information? It's not easy going down there with all these walkers all over the place; I don't want to risk my life there for an uncertain thing," Kyosei said to ensure that Okabe is actually saying the real deal.
"I am absolutely certain. I heard the bus driver speak about this matter before with the janitor back then, and it was a recent conversation, so I am quite certain about this."
Hearing this, Kyosei sighed. "Well, if that is true, then I will go there and check out the place. Considering that I am just going to check the credibility of this, Four-Eyes can stay. It is much better for me to work alone on this and get that place searched."
"Before you go, take this," Nanami tossed something to Kyosei, catching it successfully. It was a smartphone.
"What am I gonna do with this? I have a smartphone already, and I doubt it works right now..." Kyosei frowned.
"I tweaked that phone to work only like a two-way radio. I simply reprogrammed the whole thing, and that's the result. Use that to communicate with us. Without a two-way radio to use, this is the best thing we can do for now. Just call the single saved contact there and you should connect to me. Try calling it to see if it works."
"When did you have time to do this?" Souichi is surprised that his sister is doing something so techy like that.
"I have all the time in the world now that the apocalypse is here. As if I can do this when the world is still a functioning place?" Nanami grinned.
Kyosei navigated the phone menu and dialled the lone contact present on the phone. A single ring and the other line picked it up.
"Hello? Can you hear it clearly?" Nanami asked, looking directly at Kyosei holding the phone, with her voice coming from the speaker.
"Looks like it is working well. Can I keep using it without worrying about mobile data or something like that?," Kyosei ended the call while asking the real questions.
"Nope. You can use it endlessly as long as the phone still has power. I don't have the charger for it, so I don't have a way to recharge it at the moment."
Kyosei nodded. "Alright. I will contact you again once I get there and I get a confirmation the key is there.
