In a world ruled by war and where strength decides the fate of men, Kilan Yeld was born without a father and without a mother, raised in a small fiefdom where he knew nothing of its secrets but poverty and dust.

When an old priest told him of a legend — a being deep beneath the earth that granted power to whoever found their way to it — he did not hesitate. He spent five years tracing threads, deciphering codes, and forcing his way into places that the sane avoided, until he finally stood before what he had been searching for.
He got what he wanted.
But between the power he obtained and the price he never knew existed, there was a gulf whose depth he would not understand until it was too late.
